Antonio Flores Sandoval

September 24, 1918 - February 4, 2014 Antonio ("Tony") Flores Sandoval, 95, was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to Victor Sandoval and Dolores Flores and died peacefully at his Montebello home surrounded by his wife of 73 years, Carmen, and daughters. Antonio was the fourth of five siblings. He is survived by his sister Margarita Sandoval Gomez of Cuernavaca, Mexico, and numerous nephews and nieces. Accustomed a bi-national family, Antonio came to Los Angeles at age 7 with his father and foster mother, Josefina Flores in 1925. He grew up in East Los Angeles where he worked in the family businesses and attended Garfield High School. He briefly attended art school but turned to business at the urging of his father. By selling bread to a grocery store owner, Antonio met Carmen Martinez who became his wife in 1940. He was a dedicated father of six daughters and a son who predeceased him in 1990. He achieved his goal of providing his children with a good education. A self-educated man, Antonio was well versed in world history and the arts. He was an entrepreneur and a builder. He became a real estate agent and from 1977 - 1985 served as General Manager of La Reina, Inc. His favorite pastime was tracking the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Antonio is survived by his wife, Carmen and six daughters: Cecilia and Carmen Sandoval; Josephine Blake; Alicia Flores; Esther Poblet; Alana Rey; and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Sandoval. His legacy includes 7 great-grandchildren and 12 grandchildren: Paul Serna, Dr. Laura Serna, Gregory and David Valencia, Ernesto and Sofia Flores, Maria and Ines Poblet, Ana Rosa Kouttjie, Martin Sandoval, Devin Saunders and Zeno Norris. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on February 12 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 1022 Cleveland Ave, Montebello. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a preferred charity in his memory.
