Oddo, August
August 5, 1916 - September 25, 2011
August Oddo (1916-2011) Born in Cheneyville, Louisiana, the youngest of eleven children, he moved to the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles in the late 20's. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1933 and went into the Navy during WW II serving on the USS Fulton. He met Marian Messina and they had a long and very happy marriage in South Pasadena which produced Anthony Oddo (Bend, Oregon) and Nadine Oddo (La Canada Flintridge). He has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was an LA City Fireman for over 28 years where he earned the name, Garlic Gus, his watch word.
He moved to Paradise California in his retirement and took up square dancing and charitable works. He returned to Southern California in 2005 when his Marian died and lived with Nadine until his death. He recalled his youth and happy working times up until the end of his days and reminded all of his family the importance of showing your love for one another. He will be missed.

Dearest Oddo family,
On behalf of the choir at St. Bede the Venerable Church, we extend our sincere and deepest sympathy at the passing of Gus. He sat with us each Sunday at the 9am mass (a choir groupie!), and his smile and warm handshake was a welcome sight. He corrected me once when I called him "Mr. Oddo" - he said "Oh call me Gus!". As a proud veteran of WWII, we plied him with questions about his service on the USS Fulton. One Sunday he brought a photo book crammed full of his memories from the South Pacific to share with us. He gave me a picture of him in uniform - a very proud young Gus, smiling and handsome. It was an honor to know Gus in his last years. He will be so very missed here at St. Bedes. God's Speed Gus!

Dear Nadine and Anthony, and family, I am sending you my deepest sympathy on the death of your Dad, our uncle Gus. He was the life of the family and my connection to my Grandpa Joe and Grandma Oddo. He always made me laugh when he told us the stories of his boyhood and hiding from them! In the days to come, your consolation will come from your memories of him and his face in your kids! Love, Franny
