Sr Barbara Joan (formerly Joanne) Nicewander was my 6th grade teacher and our choir director from 4th through 8th grades (1959-1964). I was privileged to be asked, along with a few other girls, to sing at Christmas Midnight Mass for the Transfiguration convent. In later years, I have visited her often at Carondelet Center. She would smile brightly and announce she has dementia but to come in and chat anyway. In later years, I would sing Latin hymns with her, especially the 7 Last Words of Christ. She would listen carefully, then join in with a clear mind, a happy heart and on key voice. I will miss you, Sr. Barbara Joan and forever sing with you.
