Some trade journal articles on Ben and his WWII Draft Registration Card. Ben was a great man that was a great mentor to many and passed on his wealth of knowledge to others in the food industry. Simply a great man that will not be forgotten.

We all know Ben was an icon in the Grocery industry. So much knowledge and I benefited from him in so many ways. I used to love when Ben would come in the office on buying days, we would go over the vendors I was seeing that day. He would join me for a few of my meetings and it never failed, the vendor would walk into my office and see Ben then shrug and realize - there's nothing they can get by Ben. I loved every minute of it.
Ben was also my friend. He would sit in my office after work was done and we would talk about his family. He adored them all and would catch me up on what each grandchild was up to. Ben also had a wicked sense of humor and would tell me the funniest stories from the "good old days". We had a running joke that someday we were going to open our own business - never knew what the business was going to be but it was fun coming up with different scenarios. Ben was the brains, Barb was the beauty and I was the muscle - someone had to do the heavy lifting!
I will always cherish our office meetings, his smile and him letting me see what he would look like with bangs! I loved Ben Schwartz.

I met Ben nearly 20 years ago when I first joined up with Certified/Unified. Phil Smith introduced us and Ben quickly became a mentor of mine. His knowledge and care for the independent grocery business was unmatched by anyone I've ever run across in my career. However, even more important than his care for the business was incredible compassion to help people. Ben was a natural teacher, mentor and optimistic influencer. I am a better person for meeting and working with Ben. Our industry and our world lost a good one. RIP Ben.

Just a couple of years ago Ben would come to the office and share ideas with Gordon Case and others. He was always kind. I got to interview him about 15 years ago about the grocery industry and he liked to talk about future opportunities. He was a good and caring person.

Ben was a friend and mentor to me and so many others, an inspiration and true legend in the Grocery industry; few matched his vision and accomplishments. Ben was kind, gracious, generous and through his 90's came into our offices at least 4 days a week; we talked about the business, strategy, pricing, but he always made sure to ask me about my family, how the kids were doing in school - he knew them all by name.
Ben could remember prices of just about any item in the store, and would continue his price surveys weekly and would often sit in on vendor appointments with me and together we grilled them on getting better deals for Certified/Unified Grocers. He had a true passion for the industry.
To the Schwartz family: May God bless you and help you get through the pain of this loss. Thank you for sharing your father and grandfather with us for so long. The industry has lost a legend, but you lost your dad and grandpa, and that is always hardest to bare.
To the Certified/Unified Grocers team, on Thursday, we lost a true treasure. Rest in Peace, Ben. Thank you for your friendship.

Ben Schwartz was a tremendous goodwill ambassador for the grocery industry throughout his career. He shared his knowledge with others and gave back to numerous organizations and causes throughout his lifetime. He loved the industry and will be missed by all of his friends, co-workers and family.
