Benjamin Weinger Obituary

Weinger, Benjamin Mayer, DDS
Passed away peacefully in San Diego, at the age of 84, on August 20, 2003. Dr. Weinger was a loving father to his 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Don of Oakland and Matthew and Michele of San Diego, and to his granddaughter Sydney. He is also survived by sisters Alice Moss of Southfield, MI and Rose Feinman of Virginia Beach, VA. Born in 1919 in Minsk, Russia, Dr. Weinger emigrated to America at age 3. He graduated from Wayne State Univ. in 1942 and enlisted in the US Army were he served in Central Europe as an officer and tank platoon commander. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Dr. Weinger received a DDS degree from the Univ. of Michigan in 1951, graduating second in his class. His dental skills were widely acknowledged. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of General Dentistry, and was on the faculty of the USC Dental School. His patients remember his personal warmth, and his custom of humming and singing while he worked. The office he designed and built in San Pedro in the 1960s set the standard for modern dental practices. He was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the San Pedro YMCA and the San Pedro Lions Club. He was an exemplary artisan and craftsman. Dr. Weinger's skills, charm, creativity, inquiring mind, delightful sense of humor, and loving nature will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at sea on September 6. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to San Diego Children's Hospital or to UNICEF.

My sincere condolences to your family. I worked for Dr. Weinger in the late 1970's as his chairside assistant and it was an enjoyable time for me. He was generous with his knowledge and I learned volumes. He was innovative in his approach to conventional dentistry. His patients adored him.

I lost my own mother the day before, so I know your pain.
