Bob Birch Obituary

BIRCH, Bob Legendary Bassist Bob Birch, 56, Finally at Peace, by Michael Anthony Perna To quote one of my favorite Elton John songs, "We're crippled and we're dazed. A gardener like that one, no one can replace." Bob Birch was a legendary bass player, a devoted husband, a proud father, a loving son, a kind brother, a family man, a giving person, a loyal band mate, a wise mentor, a true friend and a die hard Detroit Lion's fan. He was also the definition of cool. Bob's smile was contagious. His demeanor was mild. His eyes were bright, but his spirit was even brighter. It would light up not only a room, but an arena as well. Everything he did, he did with the passion and enthusiasm of a teenager, whether it was performing in front of a hundred thousand fans or at home making meatballs and gravy (red sauce for those of you not from back east) for a few lucky friends and family members.
The only thing greater than his genius talent, was his humility. Not many people know that he played not only bass, but every instrument in the band, composed, engineered, produced, taught, mentored and was the one person you could always go to for honest advice and encouragement. Bob was the best at what he did and worked his way up the food chain in the music business to play with the top world class performer of our time, Sir Elton John, and he deserved it. He also played with Billy Joel, Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder just to name a few. Those of us lucky enough to have played with him know that we were playing with more than just a great bass player because somehow his spark would always thrust the band to another level. After a tragic accident seventeen years ago when he suffered a broken back and two broken legs, he spent the remaining years of his life fighting to manage his pain and suffering in silence while living an incredibly productive life. He was a true warrior. After fighting the good fight for all those years, on August 15, 2012, his body had finally no more to give. We are devastated at our loss over this past week and only through the strength of the message Bob Birch gave us through his years of giving has afforded us the strength to move forward. I know he would have expected nothing less from us. Bob was full of love. And one of the best definitions of God I know is: God is love. That tells me that Bob is with God in heaven. He is finally out of pain, and probably on the way to play the Hendrix gig. Bob Birch is survived by his wife Michele and his son Jonathan, a loving family, a host of friends and a world of fans. Donations can be made in the name of Bob Birch to the Elton John Aids Foundation. The world is truly a better place because Bob Birch was in it. I love him and his family and will miss him dearly, but I just feel blessed to have known him at all. Rest in peace brother. Bob and I went to high school together and played in jazz band, concert band, pep band, etc...our lives revolved around our music. He was such a fantastic musician and a good friend, and I had the opportunity to chat online with him only months before his passing (and had NO IDEA he had been with EJ that long). I loved the guy back then as I do now...an incredible talented individual, humble, passionate, etc. Rest In Peace, brother. One heck of a jam session is going on up there! We miss you, we honor you, and your contribution to the world of music will be here forever! RIP Bob Birch

Really miss you Bob, though we met only a few times for the interview. You are a great influence on my life and playing. You were a tough guy, and you held in the pain, like soldiers do. You had to go, I know. You are a player to the core, and I wish for your spirit to be imparted to future generations. RIP

Sometimes you come across someone who catches your eye and this gentleman caught mine. I was in the mood for Elton John one day, Philadelphia Freedom Live in Madison Square. If I listened once I have listened a hundred times. Something in the way he looked and played touched me each time and I had to find out who he was. My eyes filled with tears as I read that Bob Birch is not with us physically, however I know it was his spirit that touched heart. May his memory and spirit still be with his family, his musical family and friends. Blessings

This wonderful man I did not know. I only saw his glow. Hearing words said for him, Bass in hand, my pasion..it is also within. My love for life of those-the like-I can only say a heart felt good night. My love for my craft be it devine,my stage-not large like his but it is mine. I love, live and will die with music in my heart. Bob I wish I had known before he part.

I recorded and performed with Bob and Aynsley yeas ago. We stayed in touch over the years. I knew the pain was hard to bear but he did it for many years. Still so hard to believe he is gone. Michelle, I am so sorry for you and your son. A tragic loss. He fought the good fight as long as he could. He will be missed.

Bob in a picture I took their concert in Glasgow, UK on June 11, 2011. Their are other pics of the band in the folder including Guy Babylon. It was Davey Johnstone's 2000th show with the band. I would always shout out to Bob. The back pain from the car accident AND a escalator fall early in the 2012 tour had to be beyond unbearable. At a loss for words.....

Wow! So many beautiful Obituaries I can only add that I did get to meet Bob Birch twice once in Vegas after a show he was playing slots and I shook his hand and told him what a great concert I just saw the second was at Atlantic City before the show he was with his luggage waiting on someone and I shook his hand again and told him I'll be at the concert that night he was polite and said thank you I don't know why this happened but I want to say may God bless you and that you find your way and that I'll miss. Take care of yourself bye!

Bob Birch. What a monster bass player. Total Pro all the way. I saw you several times in Vegas with EJ. After every show I would be bragging to all my musician friends about how awesome you were! I remember you walking up to the Mic to sing, and walking backwards back to your amp. Such a Pro! Just coming up to the Mic to sing your harmonies, and then walking backwards to your amp, careful not to "upstage" EJ. Wow, I won't forget you Bob! Prayers and thoughts are going out to your family. Such a terrible loss to the music world, and of course to your loving family!
Thanks for the music Bob!

Dear Birch Family and EJ Band,
I am very saddened and sory to hear about Bob Birch's passing. I was a big fan of his. He made me smile and laugh. He seemed very happy and he loved everyone around him especially his fans. Although I didn't get to know him I loved him very much. Sometimes I wonder how could something so tragic happen to such a great person like Bob Birch? He was so wonderful to everyone in his life. He will be missed by everyone. My love and my thoughts are with his loving family and his friends at this very sad time in their lives.

Bob actually invited my daughter and myself on the tour bus after a concert in 2000 in PA, with his big smile and kind heart. I had a picture of Elton holding my daughter (5 yrs. old at the time) so he said "come on the bus, and we'll all sign it" an amazing night and a hell of an amazing guy! I always looked forward to see Bob and Elton play together, the way he would go behind Elton and the piano they looked like they were having a blast! When I saw Bob in Pittsburgh, March 2011, he hurt his leg or foot; but when I yelled out "Hi Bob" he smiled and waved - keeping in good spirits. Really will miss seeing and hearing his perfectionism. So sorry to Elton, the band and Bob's family. May the Good Lord be with him always.

My Eulogy to Bob:
ROBERT W. BIRCH
You may know him as "Bob" Birch (he'll always be "Bobby" to me) -- Bobby and I had a lot in common. We grew up in the same town in the 60s in the Detroit suburban area of St. Clair Shores, Michigan and attended the same Jr. High and High School and shared the love of music and even had the same Jr. High band director, our mutual mentor, Art Dries. Art instilled in us a real patriotic Detroit blue-collar work ethic towards our craft of music which Bob and I always respected and held up so dearly. Both of our parents were active supporters in the Lakeview High School band program. I can remember the early days when Bob's older brother Danny and I had little combo bands we rehearsed for our gigs in the Birch's basement and a little Bob was glued to us and wide eyed, just itching to join us and play along.

Raised in Motown on Motown with so much in common we were always touchstones for one another when our "blue-eye" souls brought the funk to California in our 20s. First me in 1975 and Bobby a few years later and this is when we became much closer friends. Ironically, we both ended up as sidemen for 2 of the worlds most iconic rock keyboardists. Myself as drummer with Ray Manzarek of the Doors and Bobby with Elton John. In our early Hollywood years together, Bob and I did gigs and showcases together and were in several bands together on bass and drums - notably a stint we did with a band called Fortune. We continued to remain close friends through my transition in 1986 from a drummer to a producer. I remember the proud day Bob brought Michele and baby Jonathan over wrapped in a blanket that year. Over these years up until now, Bobby played on hundreds of songs at my West Hollywood studio, CAZADOR.

Our long tenure together made for a very close and loving relationship with much resonance and mutual respect. I would have to say he was one of the best of my top 5 friends in my life. We had a special level of musically and communicating that often surpassed the need for talking about musical nuance. We just did things so effortlessly and resonantly well together by a spiritually driven "feel".

Whether virtually in the studio together or by delivering his bass tracks from wherever he was in the world over the internet, Bob always served my client's songs with his own brand of urgency and always brought something special to every situation. He consistently made my clients feel good about their music and always made me feel good about my work and musicianship. He was just like that and I'm sure everyone here who has ever worked with him knows exactly what I'm talking about.

On a personal level, there was NEVER a time with Bob Birch when he didn't tell me that he loved me both on the phone and in person. He'd say --"I love you, man." Today, those three words suddenly have a whole new meaning now and I know I must remember to tell others that I love them much much more. Thank you for that example and lesson Bob. Tears are streaming...Thank you for your part of the hundreds of songs we've played on together. Thank you for your undying friendship and loyal love. Robert W. Birch. You truly were one of a kind and made your mark in this life of mine. Goodbye for now my dear friend. I know I'll always be like a big brother to ya.... "I love YOU, man."

I had the privilege of meeting Bob and Michele in Las Vegas in 2005. I was part of a Bob Birch fan group, and after the show he met with us in the sports bar, chatted for about an hour and took photos with us. He was the first to sign my Red Piano program, and he also signed an autograph for me to take home to my son, who was the bass player in his 'garage band' at the time. My deepest condolences to Michele and Jonathan and the rest of Bob's family, his band mates, and friends.

I met Bob when I interviewed him for a magazine in 1997. He quickly became one of my favorite people, and I admire him greatly to this day. Though we hadn't spoken for years, he continued to be one of my key inspirations after the interview. He loved the band, and he loved his family. He had mentioned that he did not seek out interviews, but wanted to do an interview specifically for Jonathan to have as a young man. I am so thankful to have gotten to know him a bit, and to have learned so much from him in the short time we talked. My deepest condolences to his wife and son, the band, and all of his friends and family.

I am a fan first, last and always; a friend only marginally - closer to Michele - and few passings ever saddened me more. I knew him just well enough to know some of his passions - Michele, Jonathan, Ellie, Jackson, family, band mates, music, friends, any Detroit sports team, did I say music? His heart was full of compassion and love. I'll always remember following one of the concerts at Radio City. I was crossing the street afterwards and I looked up and there was Bob with Guy, looking like any other New Yorker, strolling and munching on apples. He greeted me warmly, said he knew I was coming from the then-head of his fan club. We chatted briefly, and then he was gone, fading off into the crowd. We love and thank you, Bob Birch, our honestly sweet, uber-talented, kindly warrior. Rest in pain-free peace. We'll have you in our world as long as Elton's music is heard.

My sympathy goes out to Michele, Jonathon, and all the guys in the EJ Band. I'm just so sorry. I spoke to Bob a few times at Elton shows, and he was always so gracious and nice. He was the epitome of "cool" onstage with the rockstar clothes, long hair and sunglasses. I loved seeing him come back onstage for the encore in his shorts, jersey and hiking boots! As a fan, I'll miss seeing him in that familiar spot behind the piano. My prayer is that all of those who love Bob will find the strength to get through today and all of the days ahead with out Bob.

God bless the family and friends of this phenomenal musician. What a loss for his wife and son, and for Elton and his fellow band members. That beautiful stage will be different now.

To my cousin Bobby. I remember you well when you were dating my cousin Michele. I remember what talent you had and I remember seeing you in Richmond,VA. I will be thinking about you and will remember all the great things about you. I only hope that Michele can rest a little easier knowing you will no more. To my cousin Michele I am so very sorry about Bobby. I will be thinking about you and Jonathan and hope you know you have a lot of people that love you and will be there to support you.

Dear Robert Wayne Birch Family, I 1st met Bob on a gig at the Yamashiro Restaurant in Hollywood in the very early 80's. He was playing sax. His presence on the gig made it a much brighter gig than it usually was and we would continue to run into each other many times over the years at different musical situations. Bob was always a delightfully inclusive and highly Interested sweetheart of a man , well mannered and extremely talented...over the years I found out how deeply he was into all of music. he would always extend his friendship upon each meeting with his interest in communicating and simply by being a good listener as well. ...all the while with that familiar Bob Birch smile of agreeability and desire to share on his face and in his eyes. We have all lost an Angel of a person and constant and devoted friend at his passing. There is no easy way to comprehend his situation. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the immediate family, and all of the vast number of friends and family he had cultivated over his lifetime in music and around the world. He will always be remembered for his lovely spirit and his gracefulness through having to endure so much personal pain from his accident and thereafter as well as his tremendous musical skills and artful tastefulness on his instruments and in so many diverse musical styles and situations, The very last times I saw Bob was on TV with Elton at the Queen's 60th and at Cafe Cordiale about a month ago. ...a total pro at each of these completely and massively different gigs...yet still with his full commitment and still with his smile and graciousness in tact at all times.WOW. Bravo Bob!! I love you for having given me such sweet memories by simply being you.

As the LA Times obit says, Bob was cool. Cool on the band stand, cool under pressure, but mostly, just COOL. In the early part of my days as the drummer with Sophie B Hawkins, our bass player had a conflict on his schedule and sent Bob in to sub for a short 10 day leg of our tour.
Bob picked up all the nuances and learned all the tunes in 3 rehearsals and we were good to go.
Bob always had some team jersey on be it baseball or football or whatever, you never new who he'd be representing that day. At the airports, he stood out and everybody knew he must be SOMEBODY. Boy was he....
As a drummer, your best friend better be the bass player or the gig turns into a job real fast. Bob was a dream.
Even around town, LA, Bob never turned down a gig. A supermarket or Mall opening, a benefit for no money at all, a club gig playing for people who couldn't care less. For Bob, it was always about the process of being a working musician that was a source of personal pride. There was nothing better, and playing with Bob in ANY situation was a pleasure.
And the hang was equally as COOL.
I hadn't seen Bob in a few years but we spoke just a few months back when I called him for a gig he couldn't take. He was working with some English Piano Player named John, I think. Oh well, next time I said, and we agreed to try again.
I suppose the show must go on and that English guy will have to hire someone else to play the right notes BUT, there will never be anyone as COOL looking over his shoulder as Bob Birch. That's for sure. Love you Bob.
