I just learned of Carl's passing. A sad day... I had the "luck" to work as an assistant for Carl way back in the '80's. I always remember Carl pulling into the studio in his Mercedes and getting out with his
seemingly always present cigar. I remember a car shoot up at Pepperdine one day where we prepped like crazy from about 6am till 3pm then sat and waited for just the right moment, about 6:03pm. In the meantime, Carl "held court" and was always gracious and polite with all our questions and of course a few stories thrown in. At the appointed time, Carl got down on his stool behind the camera and away we went, slamming 4x5 holders at him as fast as we could, he always ahead of us and waiting, then just like that, 15 minutes later we were done! Well Carl was done, us assistants still had to get everything back to the studio while Carl headed home...
I felt/feel privileged to have worked for one of the greats of our industry.
May his memory live on with the many other assistants and people he influenced and came in
contact with...

Thank you for the memories Carl...

My condolences to the family! I knew Mr. Furuta from my days running a local so cal film studio. He was the consummate professional, a real character and a true artist. Being a Sansei, I naturally looked up to him, but I also learned a few things hanging around the stage when he prepped for a shot...not just about photography, but about dealing with clients and crew. With his ever present cigar he reminded me of my favorite "uncle" and always treated me with kindness and respect. Rest in Peace.
