Carl Skolnik Obituary

July 29, 1947 - July 9, 2016 Carl Skolnik, 68, a Glendale resident since 2008, died July 9 after a six-year struggle with kidney disease. He was born in Cleveland, the second son of Philip and Malvine Skolnik. In the early 1950s, Phil and Mal packed Carl and his older brother, Stanley, into the family car and headed for warmer climes. They eventually settled in Panorama City. Phil died in 1959, and Mal moved the boys into Los Angeles and returned to work. Carl, a somewhat indifferent student, attended Fairfax High School, later earning a GED. He tried various occupations, including piano moving and shoe sales, before joining with Mike Weitzman in the jewelry business, where he was a caster. He later worked in the health-care business. He married Marcia Epstein in 1976, and they had one daughter, Jessica (Mike Cerminara). Marcia died in 2000. Carl, an avid poker player who proved that it was better to be lucky than good, found the second love of his life and married Catharine Hamm in 2008. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves two grandchildren, Rocco and Macyn. No services. Donations to American Kidney Fund (www.kidneyfund.org) or Glendale Humane Society (www.glendalehumane.org).
