Carol Waddington Obituary

February 18, 1960 - June 18, 2013
Carol was beautiful, strong, brilliant and always did things her way in life. She attended Palisades High School, graduated from UCLA Cum Laude with a degree in Political Science, and later earned a Master's degree in Entomology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She spoke five languages fluently. Carol recently won a spelling bee with her library team in Santa Paula where she volunteered in the Literacy program teaching English. At age 17, Carol began traveling. For 6 months she lived in France with what became her French family. She continued to travel and lived all over the world, always using her language skills to find work. She made life long friends everywhere she lived. Carol never held a "pity party" for herself when she contracted MS at age 40 in the prime of her life. It was not her nature to be anything but positive about life and the infinite possibilities. In fact, she kept her Flamenco shoes, hoping one day to dance again. Carol is survived by her family, father Judge Lawrence Waddington, mother Jennie Waddington and stepmother Jane Waddington. Also, her sister Susan, brothers Charles and James and stepsister Kelly, two loving nieces Dasha and Jia and her brother in-law Edison.
We will celebrate her life on June 29th at l:00 p.m. in the Universalist Unitarian Church, 740 East Main Street, Santa Paula, California, (805) 525-4647. A reception will follow with a rose planting ceremony in the garden. Later, a Mass will be celebrated at St. Monica's church in Santa Monica, California on July 8th at 7 o'clock p.m. All our family were truly blessed to have had Carol, with all her brilliance and caring ways, who graced our lives for what turned out to be such a short time.

It was so many years ago when we realized we shared the same birthday and that day is this day. I only now found out today while looking online to wish you (her) a happy birthday. Very sad to learn of the passing of some one so beautiful and so special.

Carol you were my best friend at Corpus Christi grammar school. Recently I had been thinking of you and wondering what you were up to. As I dropped my son off at college in San Luis Obispo, I would think of you. But I never followed up and now it's too late.

I would have loved to catch up with you an hear about all of your adventures. I was impressed when you went off to France, met new people, and found your love of traveling.

Your face shone with intelligence and kindness. And you opened my mind to new possibilities in the world. Your picture looks so much like how I remembered you, like you would almost start talking with me now. I can't believe you are gone.

I am sorry to miss you, but I was glad to have known you. To your family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sad to hear about Carol's death. I remember her energetic spirit when I first met her in Barcelona nearly 30 years ago. She will be deeply missed by my entire family. We loved her very much.

"A friend is a gift you give yourself." Carol's friendship has been a wonderful gift. Her ready smile and far-ranging conversation brightened up the dullness of Holland for me. Her love of life and desire to improve the conditions of others through agriculture and later literacy took her around the world where she touched and enriched countless lives. She loved good food and wine, Flamenco and Sevillanas, and helping others. She was a gifted teacher with a brilliant mind and a generous soul. I treasure our friendship, the wonderful times we shared over more than 20 years, and I will miss her laughter and her beautiful smile. My deepest sympathy to her family and all those who loved her.

I remember Carol from French classes at Pali with the amazing Monsieur Fred Johnson. She was kind, brilliant, and just very interesting. I knew she would do wonderful things in her life. I am so very sorry for your loss and the illness that cut her life short. I'm glad she got to work the kids for the Spelling Bee!

Brilliance and beauty linger in the mind, and strength of spirit; Carol leaves all these in many hearts. I'm one of those she had not seen for long years, but who never could forget her

I will miss you dear Carol - even though it was 25+ years since our last meeting - your spirit has been with me throughout the years = since Pali, the UCLA years and beyond- I will always remember your kind, vibrant, exuberant personality. May your life be a blessing for all of us: your family and your friends who's hearts were touched by you!

With loving memory and condolences to your family-
