I worked alongside Charlie in the English Department at Santa Monica College when the department was a Dickens novel of a place, filled with people whose caricature-like eccentricities did not obscure their rich characters. Charlie himself was a gallery of such characters. He could be a Charles Cheeryble as a teacher and mentor ("Here is a young friend of mine, whom we must assist"), a Mr. Fezziwig in his generosity to his colleagues ("He has the power...to make our service light or burdensome"), and a Wilkins Micawber in his Senate and Faculty Association service in his dealings with obstinate administrations ("In case of anything turning up--of which I am rather confident--I shall be extremely happy if it should be in my power to improve your prospects"). I'll miss him.
