Charles Riggs Obituary

September 27, 1936 - January 24, 2019 Dr. Charles Riggs passed away in Los Angeles, CA, following an extended illness. He was 82 years old. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carole (Lowrey) Riggs, his daughter Katherine Freeman, his son Richard Riggs, four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. Charles was also blessed with generations of extended family, and many friends and admirers. During his distinguished career, Charles was the Director of Chaplaincy Services for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and was pastor at churches in Kentucky, Georgia and Maryland. He also served many other communities as a missionary, interim pastor, volunteer minister and spiritual adviser, spreading his message of love, thankfulness, and acceptance to all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Charles' memory (https://giving.cedars-sinai.edu/ways-to-give/tribute-and-memorial-gifts). The care that Cedars provided to Charles in the last years of his life was extraordinary. Memorial celebrations will be held at 2:00 pm on February 17, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, Santa Monica, CA, and at 11:00 am on April 13, 2019 at Westwood Baptist Church in Springfield, VA.

I feel blessed to have known Charles when he joined First Pres Santa Monica, where he enriched us all with his guest preaching, shared his culinary skill during church socials, and patiently taught new board games during game nights. May your family be comforted with the many happy memories made and shared in his lifetime. With sympathy for your loss,

I was sadden to learn of the passing of my colleague in the Federal Prison Chaplaincy. During my tenure our paths crossed many times as we served many faith groups. It has been a challenge, blessing, and God rewarding ministry to share with Charlie. May the Lord be your refuge and strength family is my prayer.

Charles and I worked together for many years in the US Bureau of Prisons. He was a personal friend and a valued professional colleague. Though we have both been retired for a number of years, my time working with Charles is etched in my memory. Thanks Charlie! My best to his wife Carole.

I was honored to have met Dr. Riggs after his move to CA to be close to Richard, Michael and the twins. I was immediately struck by his keen intelligence and warm heart. His compassion for all shown through readily. I feel for his family as they mourn his passing.
