Charles Sassoon Obituary

Sassoon, Charles I. My beloved brother, Charles was born on September 25, 1912 in Buenos Aires, Argentina; he died in Santa Monica on August 23, 2001 after a long illness. After attending the University of Utah, he graduated from UC Berkeley, then became a public school teacher of literature and drama but gave up a career he loved rather than sign a loyalty oath. All his life he was an active sportsman with a passion for all the arts. The theatre was his first love; he was an active member of the Screen Actors Guild for many years. When he wasn't singing on the stage, he livened the social gatherings of his friends and family as he led them in singing rousing songs and music filled his home. A member of the American Society of Interior Designers, he and his partners owned and operated Craftsman Interiors, an interior design studio. Throughout his life he was active in progressive politics, he truly believed in "fighting the good fight" and was supportive of numerous progressive organizations. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra. He is survived by his sisters, Ellen "Peggy" Kastius of San Francisco and Rae Susan Gilbert of Laguna Beach, and many fond nephews and nieces, who along with his many friends will remember him fondly. I will miss my brother very, very much.
