CHUCK PHILIPS Obituary

Our brother, Chuck Philips, left us all in January of 2024. He had been an investigative reporter dealing with crime and corruption in the music industry while working for the Los Angeles Times. People claim he did not want an obituary so this will be short. Chuck sought THE TRUTH. He was an extremely talented and driven individual. His family and friends will miss him very much. His passing was so sad. Good Bye Brother.

Brother Dan, will you Mary and/or Carol contact me to help with the list for the celebration of Chuck's life. It can't be at m y place now because it's burnt to the ground but we'll have it at a great place. The great news is the CSULB approved the entertainment center. So save your tax deductible charity contributions for the Center for excellence in journalism and entertainment center at Cal State University Long Beach and students and professors will learn of the philosophy of integrity in covering celebrity that was unique to Chuck.

I never got the chance to give him the video of Puffy and Biggie in Vegas that fateful night involving Mr Shakur, when he visited my home in Sherman Oaks. Truly a classy man, very engaging and well spoken. I was honored to meet him. May Allah (The God) be pleased with Mr Phillips.

You were a really cool and nice guy, Chuck. I went to Cal State with you in the 80´s and we worked on the college paper together, "The Daily 49er". Never knew anyone who loved music more.

Everyone who read his stuff or worked with Chuck will tell you what a great, dogged reporter he was. But to me, he was also the most generous colleague I'd ever worked with. I was a tech reporter at the LAT covering the entertainment industry's early forays in the broadband era, and he knew all the people I didn't in the music industry. I can't tell you how many times he helped on a story. Just a fabulous guy who deserved so much more than he received.

So sorry to hear of Chuck´s passing. My husband Robbie Conal and I got to know him pretty well, after he wrote a piece on street postering with Robbie back in the early oughts. He was always warm, courageous, and relentless in his dogged efforts to expose the truth. Journalism has lost a true hero.

I had the privilege of being Chuck's editor for a few years in the mid-1990s and it was a treat. He was a one-of-a-kind journalist in all the best ways, and a lovely guy.

Condolences to Chuck´s family. I worked with him in The Times´ Business Section and have thought of him many times over the years. I have such happy memories of talking with him about music and still have and play the Songs for Della tape he made for me of John Cale and Lou Reed on Andy Warhol. Before I even came to Business I was in awe of his rap reporting for Calendar. He was such an original thinker about music journalism, fearless in his reporting, and such a good guy. I will never forget him.

Chuck was so devoted to truth that he risked his reputation and physical safety while searching. When we were together, he stopped me from working on Wikipedia to correct defamatory statements because he cared about me. Although uncommonly talented, brilliant and creative, he never took himself too seriously, he loved nature, women, art and life in general. It's hard for me to imagine a world without him.

Chuck Philips was a wonderful eccentric generous and supremely talented man who gave so much to the Los Angeles Times, which did not return the favor in kind. I am sorry for his friends and family´s loss.
