Claire Slaughter Obituary

July 21, 1924 - August 27, 2018 Claire Slaughter passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the age of 94. Claire was born July 21, 1924 in Porterville, CA. and grew up in nearby Terra Bella. After graduating from Porterville Union High School she attended UCLA obtaining a degree in History and a California teaching credential. She taught school in Santa Monica and Walnut Creek. She moved first to Montrose and then to La Canada in 1952 when her husband, Dean, took at job at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. Claire was very involved in the community throughout her life. A member of La Canada Presbyterian Church she has served as Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the Clipper Club, a service organization within the church, serving at one time as its President and Fund Raising Chairman. Claire was actively involved in La Canada schools having been a PTA President and a board member for the La Canada Scholarship Foundation. From 1977-1990 she was employed by the school district as Director of Personnel. Claire was a charter member of the AM Kiwanis Club of La Canada and served as its President at one time. She was also very active in the La Canada Tournament of Roses Association having served four terms as its President in the 1980's. From 1958-1994 she served in various capacities with the Mount Wilson Girl Scout Council. She also had been involved with the American Field Service serving at one time as Vice President and Hospitality Chairman. Claire had been recognized by several groups in the community. In 1974 she received the Les Tupper Community Service Award. She also won the La Canada School Golden Apple Award and the Thanks Badge Certificate of Appreciation from the Girl Scouts. In 1997, she was named Kiwanis Club's La Canadan of the Year. In 2006 she was honored for her community service by the Los Angeles Commission on Aging and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at the Older Americans Recognition Day Awards. She remained active in the La Canada AM Kiwanis and the La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses up until her death. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Bomze of Belmont, CA, her son Bill Slaughter of Glendale, CA and her son, Tom Slaughter, of La Canada, CA. She also leaves three grandchildren, Ryan and Robert Slaughter of Tujunga and Laura Bomze of Colton. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service which will be held in the sanctuary at La Canada Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 2:00pm. Donations in her memory may be made to the Kiwanis Club of La Canada - AM Foundation, P.O. Box 1255, La Canada, CA 91012 or to the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles on-line at www.girlscoutsla.org (La Canada Service Unit No 412).
