Dan McFarland "Mac" Chandler III obituary

Dan Chandler Obituary

May 24, 1967 - September 30, 2022 The Chandler family is saddened to share that Mac Chandler has passed on from an aggressive brain cancer, first diagnosed in December 2021.

Mac is survived by his wife of 24 years, Michelle (Luglan) and his daughters Cora Elizabeth and Willa Catherine, his father Dan McFarland Chandler Jr., sisters Sally Chandler, Cissy Chandler (John Privett), and Lindy Fisher (Damon), parents-in-law Cyndy and Richard Collins, and sisters-in-law Lisa Bacharach (Jonti) and Danielle Nielsen (Zach). Mac was predeceased by his mother Rusty (Carla Craig) Chandler and brother-in-law Thomas Tetreault.

Mac is also survived by 6 nieces, 4 nephews and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, first and second cousins, all an integral part of his life.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Hancock Park, Mac graduated from Loyola High School. He then earned a BA/Urban Planning, followed by an MBA and a Masters in Real Estate Development, all from the University of Southern California.

Mac was passionate about real estate development; he loved his craft and was grateful to work with talented people, many of whom became close friends. Mac spent 20 years with Regency Centers, a national real estate investment trust, most recently as EVP/CIO. He felt fortunate to have his career culminate as CEO/President of PS Business Parks Inc. (NYSE) where he was instrumental in the sale of PSBP to Blackstone Inc.

Mac experienced an exceptional life, the pillars of which were his cherished family, his lifelong friendships, and his steadfast faith.

He traveled to more than 65 countries, in many of which he pursued his passions for fly fishing, skiing, and golf. He was a member of the Urban Land Institute (former chair of small-scale development), California Business Properties Development, The Los Angeles Country Club and The Jonathan Club, and he was honored to serve on the Investment Committee of his alma mater, Loyola High School.

Mac formed lifelong friendships starting in grade school, and continuing through Loyola and USC, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, serving as President. Mac was also committed to mentoring others, be it in business, in life decisions or in faith; in return, the exemplary support from friends, colleagues, his family and his parish sustained him throughout this past year.

Primarily, Mac was dedicated and devoted to his loving wife Michelle and his cherished daughters Cora and Willa. After marrying in La Jolla in 1998, they moved from Manhattan Beach to Great Falls, Virginia. Their love for family and friends prompted their return to La Canada in 2006. La Canada is where the Chandlers found their community, including St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church.

Together, Mac and Michelle built a home that hosted countless gatherings for friends, family, and community outreach. Mac loved to serve; always a gracious and welcoming host, he modeled to us all what it means to be "a man for others".

The Chandler family wishes to thank their friends and community, and Mac's doctors at USC Keck, UCLA and Verdugo Hills for their kind support. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Chandler-Fisher scholarship fund at Loyola High School. www.loyolahs.edu/Chandler-Fisher

I just heard that Mac passed away. I worked on a transaction with him while he was at Regency. I liked him a lot. He was a good, honest business man. So sorry to hear he passed.

I feel blessed to have known Mac. He was a real gentleman, a servant leader, and would do anything for his family. I was moved to see a photo of his childhood friends gathered around his hospital bed. It spoke volumes of who he was. Till we meet again, Mac.

Mac was one of my all-time favorite students. He was a real pleasure to have in school, and very dedicated to his profession and urban environment throughout his career. I always loved seeing him at ULI meetings and hearing about his latest development. He died way too young. He will be sorely missed.
