Daniel Donahue Obituary

Donahue, Daniel W. of Newport Beach, California passed away suddenly on December 31, 2002. Mr. Donahue, age 60, was a long time resident of Orange County and Chairman of Donahue Schriber, a privately-held Costa Mesa-based real estate development and management firm he co-founded 33 years ago with the firm's President, Thomas L. Schriber.
Mr. Donahue was recognized as one of the shopping center industry's most respected leaders serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and past Chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centers, which represents 35,000 shopping center professionals worldwide. In its 33-year history under Mr. Donahue's leadership, Donahue Schriber garnered a reputation for the vision and quality of its development and redevelopment projects including Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California; Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California; The Market Place (formerly Tustin Market Place) in Tustin, California; Galleria at Tyler in Riverside, California; and numerous other major shopping centers throughout California. A native of Los Angeles and a graduate of San Jose State University, Mr. Donahue began his career as a broker with Coldwell Banker in 1966. Two years later he joined John S. Griffith & Co. and in 1976 became president of the firm. In 1983, Mr. Donahue and Mr. Schriber, who were principals of the Griffith Co., renamed the firm Donahue Schriber. Mr. Donahue was then named to his current position as Chairman. Always generous to charitable causes, he and his former Coldwell Banker colleagues formed a group called the Teahouse Gang which remains intact today and continues to provide financial support to Kidworks, an afterschool program for at-risk children in Santa Ana, California. Key charities of the many that he supported include Catalina Conservancy, Hoag Hospital Foundation, Pretend City and his hometown Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. An avid fisherman and boatsman, he loved trips to Catalina and Mexico to fish with family and friends on his boat, the Pilikia. A devoted family man, Mr. Donahue is survived by his wife, Michelle, and their three daughters Katherine (age 10), twins Devin and Morgan (age 7), of Newport Beach, as well as his parents Dr. and Mrs. Daniel William Donahue, also of Newport Beach. He is also survived by his four brothers and their families; Terry and Andrea Donahue of Balboa Island, California; Tim Donahue of Ventura, California, Dr. Michael (Mick) and Sheri Donahue of Oak Harbor, Washington; and Patrick and Paula Donahue of Irvine, California. Services will be held at noon on Monday, January 6, 2003 at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Donahue's memory to his various philanthropic interests. Additional information can be obtained by calling Donahue Schriber at (714) 545-1400, extension 550 or on the company website at www.donahueschriber.com .

I worked at Donahue Schriber when I was a young kid of 20! Worked as the part-time receptionist until I eventually joined the military and moved on. I remember a couple conversations with Dan in passing that were helpful little life lessons, but also how special I felt that he'd even take the time. After I left, I heard from him one last time. He wrote to me in Bootcamp to share some of his personal experiences; to lift my spirits and encourage me to stay strong. What kind of company President does that!? The good kind. I still have that letter to this day. I heard of his passing later on in life, but wasn't able to pay my respects in person. Today I am 47 years old and I still think of him. Happy I found an obit that I can paste in my scrapbook next to his picture and letter. I didn't realize he died so young. Anyway... I was just thinking about him today. Thought I'd look him up. Thanks for everything, Dan! :)
