David Alpert Obituary

March 2, 1929 - March 18, 2020 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Allan Alpert, 91, on March 18, 2020. David is survived by his loving wife, Merryl, together for 72 years; his brother Herb (Lani), sister Mimi Feldman; his children, Randy (Nicole), Derek (Julie), and Shalene; his five grandchildren, Jessica Nicastro (Eric), Dustin (Lauren), Heather, Jagger, and Olivia Alpert, and great-grandchildren, Ella and Owen Nicastro. David was born and raised in Los Angeles. After graduating Fairfax High School and attending LA City College before transferring to USC, he joined the military and served in the Army as a musician in both Japan and Korea. His early career began as a professional drummer with several local bands and he appeared in several hundred movies as a drummer, including White Christmas, The Ten Commandments, Sing Boy Sing, and a featured segment in the film The Stars are Singing with Rosemary Clooney. He later became a general contractor, building apartment buildings before being asked to oversee the reconfiguration of the Charlie Chaplin movie lot into the main headquarters of A&M Records & recording studios, where he spent decades as Executive Vice President of A&M Records and Almo Enterprises, overseeing the A&M properties and other outside investments and properties for his brother Herb and his partner Jerry Moss. David was a devoted family man and lover of travel & Caribbean cruises with his family, his race horse hobby, 60 years worth of Laker games, jazz performances and drummers, live theatre, music, movies, food, and spending time with friends and family in their second home on Maui. David will be sorely missed by those who loved him and by those whose lives he impacted with his wisdom, generosity and love.Due to the Coronavirus crisis, a private family memorial will be held at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a tribute in memory of the man that truly did everything for everyone, please send it to: Concern Foundation for Cancer Research, 11111 W. During my time working at A&M records, I kneel Dave as a kind and humble man, easy to be around, and always upbeat.
One year when my vacation came up. Dave summoned me to his office.
He asked me what I was going to do with my time off.
I have no idea Dave.
So he proceeded to tell me about this hotel in Maui.
The Pioneer Inn, in Lahaina.
He arranged accommodations
For me and my roommate, who also worked at the company.
My family and I have returned to Maui for many years, at different hotels, but without Dave´s generosity. We would have Never known the wonder of that island.
Dave was a great man!
I´ll always remember his kindness!
Thank You Dave!
A&M was one of the best parts of my life!
Love
Tommy Vicari

As a former stage manager at the A&M Chaplin soundstage, Dave was an inspiration and passionate supporter of the arts community and I will always remember him for his dedication to work and his commitment to making the A & M lot perfect in every way...Thanks for being my boss...all those years ago.

I got to meet David and his lovely wife in Maui when I went there with one of their lawyers and they were so nice and kind. I just came across this obituary but I've always thought about how great they were to a stranger. I am sorry to read about his death.

David came to A&M Canada to help us with the renovation of our building on Warden Avenue. He was such a pleasure to work with. When Marilyn and I visited LA , he and Meryl were such gracious hosts. Saddened to hear of his passing. Thoughts are with the family during these difficult times. God bless.

After working at A&M for about 2 years. It was time for my vacation .
I was working with George Harrison on the Concert for Bangladesh . at the time, however I was scheduled to go. We didn't know where to go. So Dave called me into his office, and told me, that my roommate and I, Lou Mancuso, from Almo Music should go to Maui, and stay at a hotel called, The Pioneer Inn , in Lahaina. Somewhere we both had never been. Norm Kinney took my place with George Harrison, and we went off on this adventure. I have taken my family to Maui almost every year since then. With occasional interruptions for work. It remains one of our favorite places in the world.
Dave was always accessible, upbeat, and supportive! It saddens me that he is gone. The world was a better place with Dave in it. He will be missed, but I will always remember his kindness.
Thank You Dave!

While working at A&M Records I saw a familiar face walk up to the entrance young security guard and say,"I don't have an appointment but I am here to see Mr. Alpert." Recognizing the jazz great I tried to intercede on Dizzy Gillespy's behalf..."Mr. Gillespi is here to see Herbie, don't keep him waiting!" Dizzy said,"No man, I'm here to see DAVE Alpert!
