In August 1979 I traveled to the UK and Ireland with my friend Barry Singer. We planned to rent a car in Dublin and drive around the Irish coast, but learned that a rental with an automatic transmission would be prohibitively expensive. A car with a stick could be had for 1/3 of the cost, but neither of us had ever driven such a vehicle.
We struck up a conversation with a friendly American a couple of years older than us, from LA. His name was Don Brunsten and he said he could drive a stick. We split the cost of the car and in exchange for him driving we paid for the gas. A good deal!
Don was great company and great fun over the following week. The anecdote I still remember was how he looked up the phone number of Joe Besser (a latter-day member of the Three Stooges) who lived in LA, and then visited him on condition that they discuss anything but the Stooges.
Don and I exchanged a couple of letters in 1979-80. I just now looked up his name on a whim and saw that he died only last month. My condolences to his family and friends, my week with him remains a happy memory in my life.

Many great memories of time spent with Don. Loved his sharing his travel adventures. Don led a group of us on a tour of his LA. Grand Central Market, Angels Flight, LA Library, Bradbury Building, Biltmore Hotel, The Last Book Store, some famous cafeteria and Tiki Bar. Ending with evening at the Ace Hotel roof top. What fun. Stories about areas where silent films were shot. Don was so happy and proud of LA.

Don was our neighbor across the hall Playa Vista for the past several years. And although we didn´t know him well, we were sad to hear of his passing. As fellow orange tabby owners, we got used to seeing his orange kitty in the window off the terrace. Sending you all warm wishes and our sympathy for his loss.

Don was my dear friend of 26 years and will be sorely missed. His passion for exploring ideas and places opened me up to so many memorable adventures. Don knew so much about a wide range of topics, delighting and inspiring those around him.
