Dorothy Stein Obituary

STEIN , Dorothy M.
Dorothy M. Stein, a resident of Santa Clarita (and formerly West Los Angeles) passed away on July 2, 2007 in Granada Hills, California. She was 96 years old.
Dorothy was the daughter of John and Katherine Wherley, the second of their five children, and was born on March 31, 1911 in Jessenland, Minnesota. She was predeceased by her husband Harry who passed away in 1977. She is survived by her son Bill, daughter-in-law Penny, and her grandchildren Gail, Mark and Marianne Stein. She is also survived by her daughter Beth, son-in-law Andrew Nadeau and granddaughter Kelly Nadeau. Dorothy is also survived by her sister Kate Dougherty and many nieces and nephews.
Like many original residents of the Midwest, Dorothy and Harry came to California at the end of World War II to live, work, and raise a family. She continued her career in the banking industry, but then devoted herself to be a stay-at-home wife and mother, a role at which she excelled. She provided much love and care, as well as a wonderful home for her husband and children.
Dorothy lived a very simple and modest life and rarely indulged in extravagances for herself, preferring instead to provide them for her children. She took great pride in her Irish heritage and was thrilled to make a trip to Ireland some years ago with Beth. She also enjoyed returning to her home town in Minnesota on several occasions even though she did not miss the Midwest weather.
Dorothy was a remarkably active senior citizen. In her late 60's she began a second work career at a public library in West L.A., near her home, and commuted by walking and riding the bus. Typical of members of the "Greatest Generation," she was fiercely independent and lived on her own in her apartment until shortly before her death. She will be very much missed by all who knew her.
Her rosary and funeral Mass will be held at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary located at 11160 Stranwood Avenue in Mission Hills, California. Her rosary will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, and her funeral Mass will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 12.
