Evelyn Kohl Obituary

Kohl, Evelyn D. Evelyn Dolores Kohl passed away on May 26,2015 in Woodland Hills after an extended battle with lung cancer. She was 92. Evelyn was born in Detroit, Michigan, the first of three daughters, to Oscar and Bessie Belinsky. When she was 9 years old the family moved to Los Angeles where she attended several grade schools, graduating from Belmont High School in 1940 While attending school, Evelyn received training in opera singing. This training and a naturally beautiful mezzo soprano voice gave her a lifelong hobby and provided great pleasure to others. At various times she belonged to the Beverly Hills, Whittier, and Northridge Opera Theaters, and sang important roles in Madam Butterfly, Cosi fan tutti, and other productions. She also sang at weddings including her own (by way of a recording) and in choral groups. While Evelyn was still in high school, her cousin introduced her to his friend, Arthur Kohl, a fellow engineering student at college. The relationship blossomed and Evelyn and Arthur were married in 1943, beginning a partnership of over 71 years. The Kohls had three sons, one of whom tragically died in his youth. During much of her life, Evelyn worked hard at being a good wife and mother, becoming an accomplished cook and food connoisseur, joining the PTA, and driving her boys to Cub Scout meetings, etc. Later, she obtained a real estate license and became active in that field. Throughout good and challenging times of her life, Evelyn always maintained an upbeat attitude and possessed a great sense of humor. She loved jokes, and her hearty laughter will always be remembered. Evelyn is survived by her loving husband, her two sons, Jeffrey and Martin, her two sisters, Margie Taren and Estelle Itkin, a large family, and long-time neighbors and friends.
