Flavian Welstead Obituary

September 24, 1939 - December 4, 2017 Fr. Flavian Welstead was born to John and Eileen Welstead in Douglas, Cork, Ireland, on September 24, 1939. At his baptism he was given the name Patrick Finbar. He was received as a Capuchin Franciscan on October 3, 1959 in Rochestown, County Cork, where he took Flavian as his religious name. A year later on October 4th he made his first profession. He studied philosophy at St. Bonaventure's and took his theology courses at Ard Mhuire Friary. On May 21, 1967 he was ordained at the friary chapel there. After Ordination, Flavian was assigned to the Irish Capuchin Mission in Zambia, Africa, for the next four years. He served at several mission stations in this short period of time: Sioma, then Manganga and St. Theresa's Cathedral at Livingstone. In 1973 he was assigned to serve in the Vice-Province on the West Coast of America. He served in Hermiston, OR, for one year and then was assigned to St. Francis High School in La Cañada, CA, as a teacher, for one year. He would return to the high school again in the '80s and '90s as a teacher and Director of Development. Also in this time span he served for three years at St. Joseph Parish in Roseburg, OR, and at St. Francis Parish in Bend, OR. He also served as an associate pastor for the first time at Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Burlingame, CA, from 1986 to 1989. Flavian was very outgoing. He easily made friends and was able to gather a strong support team for whatever task he was about, whether it be youth ministry, spiritual retreat programs or development fund raising. Flavian was very hospitable to all and he loved the people he served. In his younger days he played soccer and golf and was also a bit of a prankster loving a good laugh. Above all, Flavian loved ministering the sacraments and being with the people he loved in their time of need. From 1991 to 2000 he was at our provincial friary of St. Francis in Burlingame, CA, where he served as the Development Director for the Province of Our Lady of the Angels. After a mini-sabbatical in the last half of the year 2002, he returned to Burlingame as the associate pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish where he remained until His Lord and Master called him home December 4, 2017 at Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, CA. He is survived by two sisters Jane O'Brien and Marie Furlong. He had two deceased brothers Noel Welstead and Donal Welstead. Vigil on Monday, December 11 at 7pm and Funeral Mass on Tuesday, December 12 at 10am at Our Lady of Angels Church, Burlingame, CA. Mass of Christian Burial at Old Mission Santa Ines, Solvang, CA, at 10am on Wednesday, December 13. Following the Mass will be the burial at San Lorenzo Friary, Santa Ynez, CA. Reception will follow at Old Mission Santa Ines parish hall in Solvang, CA. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in memory of Fr. Flavian Welstead to the Capuchin Franciscan Order, 1345 Cortez Ave., Burlingame, CA 94010.

Father Flav was so kind to us when our brother passed unexepectedly. Our family was in shock. Father Flav sat with us, remembered our brother and his funny ways, and shared with us in our great sorrow. Thank you Father, for your kindness. You will always be remembered by our family.

So sad to hear of Father Flavian's passing. I used to visit my fiancé for a year and half before she moved to New York. Went to mass every Sunday at OLA when I was in town. Loved talking with Flav after mass and at Fiddler's. A truly holy and loving priest. He will be missed. Ed Conroy, Huntington, New York

Father Flavian officiated our marriage forty years ago in Roseburg. We have exchanged Christmas cards with him for nearly all forty of those years, filling him in as our family grew. We were married during our first year of law school and crammed our marriage prep with Father into a few weekend trips home from school between August and December. It was Father who chose our wedding date, The Feast of the Holy Family, which at the time went right over our heads, but we have appreciated more over the duration of our marriage. It feels as though he must have been in Roseburg longer than three years, as we have fond memories of him smashing cookies in my coat pocket during youth night at the parish and returning the favor in his hood, before we left for college. We just recently found out that he had passed away. We will always remember him fondly.

I will always remember Fr Flavian sitting on the floor in our kitchen talking with me as I prepared dinner. He refused to sit on a chair at the table, he sat with his back to the door and said to remember him as coming in the back door of our home and enjoying our family life. He also prayed for me, a very nervous 42 year old finally getting my drivers license. His words when Sam died were very comforting (I knew the two of you went for an after dinner smoke). Thank you Fr Flavian, rest in peace.

I am reminded of my Uncle
Micheal - Father Cyril - who went to Rochestown, was assigned to St Francis High School and spent his final years in Solvang where he passed away on 17th January 2002. They must have been good friends and judging by Flavian's smile both were a couple of rogues.

May they all rest in peace.

Dearest Flav, you were one of earths' authentic and graceful souls. Healing, supporting and guiding all in a gentle, effective and fantastically humourous fashion.Marrying Michael and I and baptising our daughters was hugely important and memorable for us. We all miss you and I will always remember your wise words "if you're in a situation where you're not growing then it's not right for you".thank you for being such a big part of our lives it was our privilege knowing you. Lots of love Louise,Michael, Connie,Molly,Robin,Martha,Tess and Callumxx

What a special man. Our family goes back to when the Capuchins were in Bend , Oregon. He married three of our children, and baptized many of the grandchildren. He came back to Bend to put my husband and his friend to rest six years ago. He came back again to marry a granddaughter. We have stayed in touch all these years and will miss him so much, but know he is happy and in a much better place. Love you Flav. All the ZettlesLoraine

Special Man and was integral in dealing with the passing of both of my parents. He came to see them often and presided at their funerals. Two of my sons went to OLA as well - and was always happy to take time for them

There is a chair in Fiddler's Green a popular Irish Pub in Millbrae outside of San Francisco. It reads "Reserved for Fr Flavian". It is the only chair with that on it. You have venture to Rome to find a more important chair. From Fiddlers to St. Peter's. He will be missed.

Flav was a close family friend and I have nothing but fond memories of him. He had a great sense of humour and we were always on edge waiting to see what prank he'd get up to next! Never a dull moment when he came to stay. He had such an influence on me I took Flavia as my confirmation name. I will miss him but I'm delighted he's up there watching over me. May he rest in Peace.
