Florence VERGER Obituary
VERGER, Florence Florence Verger, a longtime Los Angeles resident active in community affairs, died December 22 at the age of 94. Florence was born on October 13, 1915 in Clarion, a Jewish farming cooperative in Utah; the family moved to Los Angeles in 1927 for better educational opportunities for their six children. Florence graduated from UCLA and completed her teacher training at USC. She married Morris (Morrie) Verger in 1939. While Morrie completed his degree in architecture, Florence taught business subjects in high school. After Morrie graduated and went to work for the Navy, Florence continued to teach until their son Paul was born in 1945. Daughter Alice followed in 1949. As well as being a full-time mother, Florence supported Morrie in establishing his own architectural practice in 1951. In addition, she was president of the Women's Architectural League, including fifteen years on the board and managing home tours. She also supported Morrie as president of the local and state chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). She was active for fifty years in the League of Women Voters. She served on the board for six years and was First Vice President, as well as presenting explanations of ballot propositions, serving on advisory committees and acting as unit chair. She was appointed by the LA City Council to an advisory committee to develop a plan for the Mulholland Scenic Parkway; it was adopted as city policy in 1970, culminating many years of work. Florence and Morrie were avid skiers, and in later years skied with their children and grandchildren, and took ski trips all over the world. Florence was also an avid bridge player. Florence managed the small apartment building they owned for 35 years. After Morrie died in 1999, she continued to manage the building and her involvement in the League of Women Voters. She also continued to play bridge every week, and traveled well into her 90's. Florence was a warm, caring person, with a gift for friendship. She is survived and will be missed by son Paul, daughter Alice (Adrian) Swanton, brothers Leon Brown and Edward I. Brown, two grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park Mortuary, 6001 Centinela Ave, Los Angeles CA, 800-576-1994.
