Fred Keenan Obituary

September 7, 1914 - August 17, 2016 Fred Vincent Keenan died peacefully on August 17th at the age of 101. Mr. Keenan was the president of Keenan Pipe and Supply, a plumbing supply business until 1983. He joined the company in 1937 and oversaw the expansion of the business to include 32 branches nationwide. In 1983 Mr. Keenan sold the company to Hajoca Corporation in 1983, and, devoted his time to Keenan Investment Company, developing industrial real estate. He remained president of Keenan Investment for the rest of his life, even going into his office 3 days a week up until a month ago. Mr. Keenan was also a well-known philanthropist and continually supported causes close to his heart. He attributed much of his success to the education he received at USC, from which he graduated in 1937. He was an active supporter of the USC Marshall School of Business, and endowed the Fred V. Keenan chair in finance. In 2002, he provided another gift to the University, which established the MBA Career services center. Mr. Keenan also supported causes closer to his home in Glendale. He helped Glendale Adventist hospital with fundraising efforts. He was a Foundation Board member from 2003-2007 and became a Foundation Emeritus Board member in 2008. He received the Oak Society Spirit of Giving Award in 2011. Fred Vincent Keenan was born on September 7, 1914 on Lake Avenue in Pasadena. He grew up in Hollywood where he attended Fairfax High School, and, graduated in 1933. He received a BA from USC in 1937. While at USC, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Also at USC, he met Blythe Rae Hawley, a fellow student, and, they were married in 1938 until Blythe's death in 1995. Fred is survived by his daughters, Susan Nyby, Kathleen Hawken, and longtime companion, Bette Ryan, 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his son, Fred V. Keenan Jr. Fred's memorial service will take place on September 8th, at 10:00 AM at the USC Our Savior parish, 844 West 32nd St. LA, 90007. There will be a reception to follow at the Jonathan Club, 545 S. Figueroa St. LA. Transportation to the memorial service will be provided at the Jonathan Club. In lieu of flowers, donations made be in Fred's name to Glendale Community Free Clinic at 134 No. Kenwood St. Glendale, Ca.91206. Or to the Karl Neupert ASA Educational fund at 1200 N. Arlington Heights Rd. Itasca, Il. 60143 -Suite 150.
