Frederick Ulrich Obituary

1943 - 2021 On October 26, 2021, Frederick Robert Ulrich, Jr. passed away in his Hidden Hills, California home, surrounded by his loving wife and their children. He was 78 and as handsome as ever.

Fred was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the eldest child of Col. (Retired) Frederick Robert Ulrich, Sr. and Beatrice Rose Ulrich. The family lived on various military bases internationally and in the U.S. before settling in Fairfax, Virginia.

He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point from the enlisted ranks of the U.S. Army, joining the class of 1966. During his four years in the Army, Fred achieved Airborne and Ranger qualification as a Field Artillery officer and earned a competitive assignment with an airborne Field Artillery unit stationed in Germany. He served a year-long tour in Vietnam, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star.

Following his military service, Fred earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. For 10 years, he worked in M&A at Morgan Stanley & Co. and Warburg Paribas Becker in New York. He later moved to Los Angeles where he was the co-founder and CEO of two private equity firms Raebarn Corporation and Buttonwood Capital Group.

"Some enchanted evening" in 1984, Fred laid eyes on his future wife Kimila at a mixer of the Harvard Bachelors and the Junior League of Los Angeles. The two were inseparable from that night on. During their 35-year marriage, they enjoyed traveling the world, hosting memorable parties, and partnering on philanthropic endeavors.

Fred believed a strong vocabulary was a requisite for success, so he designed and taught his own curriculum called Verbal Cogitator to local students. As a life-long patron of the theater, Fred served proudly on the Board of Directors of the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. He also was an Advisory Director of the Entrepreneurial Association at UCLA Anderson School of Management. Fred volunteered as a financial advisor to the president of Chaminade College Preparatory, and in 2016 both Fred and Kim were named Founders of the school in acknowledgment of their contributions.

Fred held a profound appreciation for the exquisite grounds of West Point, and his time there as a cadet was precious to him. To honor his devotion to the Long Gray Line, Fred's ashes will be interred at West Point Cemetery in West Point, New York.

Those who knew and loved Fred are encouraged to watch the masterful cult slasher film Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge (1989), which he co-wrote, and to learn a new vocabulary word (with alacrity, if you please). Gifts in Fred's honor may be made to the West Point Association of Graduates. westpointaog.org/giveonline

Fred is survived by his wife Kimila Williams Ulrich and his children Lauren Tate Ulrich, Farrell Ulrich Hanifin (Bobby), Ricky Ulrich, and Amy Ulrich Dichter (Matt).

Was sad to see your notice but what a beautiful tribute. I knew Fred at an unsettled time in both our lives right before he met YOU, Kim. He invited me to your wedding but I was very sorry that I happened to be out of town. Then did not keep in touch.
I am happy to see what a wonderful, blessed life he had!
