Gary Hyland Obituary

October 18, 2017 Surrounded by family, our Gary passed away peacefully after a brave battle with cancer. Growing up in Hemingford, NE, he excelled in sports and music in high school and attended the University of Nebraska and Chadron State College. Gary retired from Walter Reed Jr. High School, in 2001 after more than 30 years of service as a respected educator and guidance counselor. Gary loved the ocean and spent his last years lovingly restoring his sailboat, Magic. He lived each day in a positive, constructive manner and never knew a stranger. His love of life, consideration of others, and wonderful sense of humor will always be remembered. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Dianne; stepdaughters, Shannon and Shawna (Von); brother, Bob (Pat) of Greeley, CO; nieces, Chris and Kim (Dan); and nephew, Scott (Brooks). At Gary's request, there will be no memorial service. His ashes will be scattered at sea. If you would like to make a charitable donation in Gary's memory, please consider The Gentle Barn, Santa Clarita, CA, or www.alzgla.org. "Fair Winds and Following Seas".

As the clerk running the Attendance Office for 25 years, at Walter Reed, I often interacted with Gary. Always treated me with respect, laughing, smiling, and telling me "blond" jokes..because of my hair color! Both my children Jon and Cathy , attended Reed during Gary's tenure, and we are all sorry for your loss..Beverlee Nelson
