George N. Carmack

October 7, 1918 - February 8, 2016 George Newlin Carmack, 97, was the only child of R.L. and Ann (Duarte) Carmack. He spent his early childhood in his father's hometown of Dana, Indiana. Eventually, the family moved back to his mother's native Southern California. While at John Marshall High School, George became an Eagle Scout. At UCLA, George was a letterman and a captain of the UCLA soccer team. He was President of Circle C as well as a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and ROTC. After graduating from UCLA, George joined the Army Air Corps. As a B-17 pilot, Captain Carmack flew 35 missions over Europe during WWII. He was awarded many medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross,and was eventually promoted to Major. In June of 1946, George married TWA hostess, Shirley Galusha at the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA. He joined and expanded his father's business, Carmack Insurance. George leaves his wife, Shirley; his children--Kate Follette, Patty Poyner and husband Jim, Jim and Jeanne Carmack, Barbara Zammarchi and husband Steve; his grandchildren-Jordan Webb and husband Wes, Jonsen Carmack, Nick Poyner, Christine Poyner, Jackson Carmack; and his great-granddaughter Jameson Webb. The family will celebrate his life privately.
