George Deukmejian Obituary

June 6, 1928 - May 8, 2018 Governor George Deukmejian, loving husband of 61 years, father and grandfather, passed away from natural causes on May 8, 2018. His family was at his side. Born June 6, 1928 in Menands, New York, he died at home in his adopted city of Long Beach, California, where he lived for more than 55 years. George was a fine, decent man of integrity and character who was tremendously proud of his Armenian heritage. He loved his family and his friends and was deeply grateful to the many loyal people who believed in him and served his administrations. We will miss him dearly. To celebrate George's life, there will be a public memorial at 1 PM on Saturday, June 9 at the Terrace Theater, located at 300 E. Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the YMCA-Model Legislature George Deukmejian Endowment, the California Science Center, California State University of Long Beach Disabled Students Services, the Ararat Home of Los Angeles or to the charity of your choice.

Ex California Assemblyman, Attorney Gerneral and Governor George Deukmejian's wife noticed a surprising number of her physicians in Long Beach, California were from "Northern Ireland". Those Catholic doctors could not get admitting privileges to hospitals in the English ruled six northeast Ireland counties. This made it difficult to maintain a practice. So those doctors were forced to emigrate.

Mr. Deukmejian's Armenian parents also suffered state sponsored discrimination in Turkey. George Deukmejian helped get the California physician licensing rules adjusted so these graduates of British or Irish medical schools could more easily transfer their licenses to California.

Perhaps some readers remember the details of Georg's good deed. It was quite some time ago. For this also, he deserves to be commemorated .

I met Governor Deukmejian while walking the precincts during the first run for Governor. He was so low key and personable, talking to us like we were old friends. My friends and I were thrilled to have a winner on Election Day.
No governor since him has won the respect of both parties, led with courage and kept our state Golden .
One year on the day before Mothers Day I ran into him at a Hallmark shop in Belmont Shore. I told him I wished he was still governor and he said it was nice being out of the limelight again.
Rest well Mr. Governor, watch over our state, we need more people like you!
