Gertrude Gilbert Obituary

September 14, 1918 - September 4, 2017 Gertrude Frances "Trudy" Gilbert was a remarkable woman. An elegant yet down-to-earth lady, she had a warm, gentle strength and a great sense of humor. Even as she aged and dealt with dementia, she never lost her endearing personality or her ability to surprise us with witty retorts, continuing to attract and nourish people with her grace, charm, and wholesomeness. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she came to California in 1942 with her husband, composer Herschel Burke Gilbert, who predeceased her. She raised four children while assisting and often joining Herschel in both his music and community endeavors. A gourmet cook, she taught classes and tested for Bon Appetit Magazine. She strongly supported the LA County Department of Mental Health and their efforts to address mental illness. An avid reader who seized every opportunity to learn, she always regretted having been unable to afford college, gifting many students so they could do so. Trudy passed away at home surrounded by people who love her. She is survived by her children, Toby and Daniel Bernstein, John and Nancy Gilbert, Paul Gilbert, Gwen Olson; by her grandchildren, Ethan and Maly Bernstein, Gregg Olson, Kylee and Zach Link; and by her great grandson, Covell Bernstein. Those wishing to honor her memory are requested to make a contribution to the Herschel Burke Gilbert Family Scholarship Fund at either Peck School of the Arts, UWM, Hefner Center Rm 225, 3271 N Lake Dr, Milwaukee WI 53211 or The Juilliard School, 60 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York NY 10023 or by helping a worthy student you know achieve higher education.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
