Gordon Hanusek Obituary

Dr. Gordon Hanusek's life's journey began on a farm in Camden, Ohio, and concluded peacefully in Studio City, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. It was a voyage that passed through Europe and reached the heights of the medical profession while remaining grounded in the values in which it originated.
Gordon was the last of ten children. He spent his early years helping his family manage the farm, and many a day operating a tractor from dawn to dusk. It was during this time that he was befriended by a pig he named Arnold. Throughout his life, he fondly remembered the time he spent with the pig, always remarking about how smart Arnold was and the games they played together. Even with this connection, upon asking Gordon about the demise of Arnold, he simply stated that he was "delish".
Gordon graduated from high school in 1948 at the age of 16 and went on to attend his beloved The Ohio State University. Upon completing his undergraduate studies, he continued to the OSU College of Medicine, where he received the Borden Award for meritorious research. He and Dr. Leo Sapirstein, his professor and mentor, discovered during a Cardiac Output Study for pregnant women, that lying on their left side would increase cardiac outflow. This study was published in the American Journal of Physiology in 1958. Gordon graduated Top 10 in his class of 1958 and received the 2nd highest grade on the State of Ohio Medical Board exam, only missing the top slot by a single point.
Upon the successful completion of medical school, Dr. Hanusek, with his young family, moved to Los Angeles where he interned and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the LA County General Hospital from 1959 until 1963. He joined the Air Force and spent two years in Toul-Rosieres, France, delivering the children of service members and storing wheels of stinky cheese on his window sill.
Following completion of the ROTC service with the Air Force In 1966, Dr. Hanusek returned to Los Angeles and began his 50 yearlong career, which included his private practice at OB/GYN Medical Group, retiring at age 80. Dr. Hanusek calculated that he delivered more than 25,000 babies - the equivalent of the entire cities of Laguna Beach or Calabasas!
It was not uncommon for Dr. Hanusek's family and friends to learn from his patients that he performed his duties with compassion and care. He was always quick with a joke, to the point where it was expected, and his patients would question him if it was missing. During his time as a gynecologist, he was THE preeminent expert in the Los Angeles area, a common referral for his peers' patients.
Throughout his practice, Dr. Hanusek provided his staff with opportunities to grow professionally and encouraged them to pursue additional education. The culture fostered in the office made it enjoyable to come to work and filtered into the care that was provided to his patients.
When at home, Gordon remained humble and full of jokes. He enjoyed following the Buckeyes, cooking, shopping for bargains, and maintaining well-manicured fingernails. He had multiple closets full of suits, shoes, and over 600 ties. It was not uncommon for him to stand out with vibrant colored outfits with pink pants or red shoes. He moved through life as smoothly as he did on the dance floor (few knew Gordon was an instructor for the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in New York when he was younger).
All these experiences created a full life, filled with respect and love. We are presented with a finite time on this earth. We show the world different versions of ourselves and leave a trail of memories in our wake. Gordon was intelligent and driven to success, working hard to reach a life focused on healing others. Dr. Hanusek provided an exceptional level of care for his patients, support and encouragement for his colleagues, and created knowledge for future generations to build upon. He provided joy and support to his friends and family, always encouraging and soft-spoken ...... and he LOVED the Buckeyes! He will be missed.
Dr. Gordon Hanusek is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Terry; son Emrek Hanusek; son Adam Hanusek (Shirley); daughter Mia Dean (Justin); step-daughter Jacqueline Valle (Greg); step-son Ryan Valle; seven grandchildren; and nephew Jay Hanusek (Diana). Gordon was preceded in death by his daughter Rebecca Hanusek.

Dr. Hanusek was a wonderful doctor. He delivered me AND my son. My mother worked for his answering service for years and he was always so kind. Rest in peace, doctor.

I had the privilege of working for Dr. Hanusek for 6 years as the only RN in the office. He was a wonderful doctor, he cared about his staff and patients. I learned a great deal from being his back office nurse. As noted by several others he had a good sense of humor and frequently had a joke to share.
My condolences to the family.

Dr. Hanusek delivered both my children when we lived in California. He was so kind and caring. He did, however, not agree that I should name her Gordena .

Dr. Hanusek was one of my favorite people. He was always in a good mood and we had many great conversations. He was such a great friend and he will missed by so many people that were lucky enough to have had them in their lives.
Dr. Hanusek and Terry came to my 30th birthday when he was in his 70s and was the life of the party! The world won´t be the same without him.

Dr. Hanusek always greeted me with a smile and "Hello my fellow Czech and Canadian." He made it possible for me to have my only child, Kristyna. I will never forget him and his kindness.

Terry, what a wonderful individual dear Gordon was in every way! We're so glad we had more times to share as our lives moved outward to Ventura County ... adventures varying from special burgers by Gordon at the beach, to the Resting Cowboy who still holds up one wall of our "barn", tractor & orchard adventures and sharing dinner in your amazing new barn-to-architectural dream home! :) May his tremendous love sustain you always. Dr. Hanusek was a wonderfully kind and loving person to me and my family. I met him through work, and his sense of warmth and humor was evident from our first conversation. It was his loving heart and his jovial approach to life that made me always look forward to seeing him and his gracious wife. They embraced myself and my family as if we were their own and were always so hospitable and humble.
When I think of Gordon, I think of how he always made me laugh, put me at ease, and how he never hesitated to help me or my family however he could. He was a rare and special man.
The world is dimmer without his presence. I am so grateful I was blessed enough to call him my friend. May he transcend to a place of everlasting peace and vitality. And may he continue to laugh and smile with us from beyond.
He is loved and he is missed.

He was the most incredible doctor on the planet. He did two surgeries on me that he admitted was a challenge to him, big time. The first so I could hopefully become pregnant again, which I did, tears all around on this even in the office. The second surgery he was challenged on was when my fourth child was to be born and the very early stage of cancer was detected in my uterus. I kept asking why he could not do the hysterectomy, which he said would be done a few months after my c-section, at the same time. The challenge was accepted and everything was a huge success. Humor wise, I could give him as good as he could with me, which was fabulous. He was the doctor I could never ever forget and who I can still picture in my mind's eye. The world has lost a truly great human being, but he is upstairs now receiving even greater rewards. With the deepest gratitude from the hearts of B. Tennyson Sebastian II and Jacqueline Sebastian. He was the incredible doctor who made it possible for us to be able to be parents to B. Tennyson Sebastian III and Christopher James Sebastian. For without him, these two young men would not be here.

Gordon was our neighbor and friend. He was my gynecologist and delivered my only living child, Michelle who was also his patient,
He and I were true friends, we smoked together, he with his Mores and I with my Sherman MCD´s. He taught me how to take care of myself and keep myself clean down there...He delivered my 2nd baby Evelyn, a boy who passed away...
I remember he raised snails for escargot. There were 62 steps up to his home in Studio City.
RIP my dear friend and neighbor. My heartfelt condolences to his son Adam and his whole family!!
Thank you Gordon.
I am a member of the American Legion, Post 377. We will all honor and salute him. He was an amazing man and inspiration to all who knew him and loved him deeply.
To his son Adam ~ my heart goes out to you.

I met Dr. Hanusek in France. I was a Corpsman in the OB/GYM wing and worked with him for three years. I baby set his boys all during that time. It was because of him I went back to school, received my GED and went on to Graduate from Syracuse Univ..upon my discharge. Dr. Hanusek has always been my Hero. I owe him so much. He was and is a Great Mentor and Friend. Miss you.

I knew Gordon mostly through our association on the medical staff of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. We shared many mutual friends at work and socially and both had children at Campbell Hall school. Gordy was universally liked, loved and respected by his peers and his patients. We had much in common being widowers at relatively young times in our lives, Fortunately I can say each of us found new life, new love and a way forward through the challenges presented by tragic loss. Great recovery my friend and I think I can happily say we did not and will not die young!

Dr Gordon was my client, his lovely wife Terry came to my store to pick some clothing for him, then we met and since then we became friends, he loved clothing and his taste in clothes was European and clothing suited well his European slim figure, whenever he came to my store he radiated kindness and positive energy and empathic demeanor, he loved to share his fresh lemons with me which reminded me of my mediterranean upbringing , his wife Terry took care of him the best any human being can do , she loved him so much but someone up there I guess loved him more ... the world just lost a kind and gentle soul and he will always be remembered by every person he met, I am sure he is in a better place....

Dr. Hanusek was an amazing physician and surgeon. He really cared about his patients and took the time to help them with their medical issues. He always made you feel comfortable and always had a good joke for you. He understood women's health issues and treated those respectfully with care. As an RN I truly appreciated all he did for me and so many others. I was so sad the day he retired even though he deserved that time.
God bless him and his family.
I will never forget him for all the help he provided through

The Hanusek family lived a couple of houses away from us when we moved to La Canada in 1961 when I was 10 going on 11. I remember Gordon as being very kind and soft spoken. When they went on vacation I was charged with feeding their German Shepard who was quite intimidating. Gordon put me at ease, as he walked me through the process (which included climbing through a bedroom window) assuring me I wasn´t in any danger.
In later years, he was my gynecologist and was to deliver my middle son. I was disappointed he was on vacation at the time of delivery. Every time I saw Gordon through the years I was impressed by his warm and gentle demeanor, as well as his sense of humor. I also loved the way he dressed. He will always be remembered with great fondness by us Porters.

I was a single mom at 40 years of age and raising two young sons when my cardiologist husband left our family! I immediately went back to school to get an RN degree thanks to the LA courts settlement!
VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN was my OB rotation with Dr. Hanusek. Ten years later when I pursued my FNP degree DR. GORDON HANUSEK again helped me! He was a teacher, a mentor, a great OB/GYN, and always reached out to help others. I finally recently retired at 78 from nursing. I know that Gordon is in HEAVEN.
So I am counting on him one more time to eventually reach out and pull me up there!

My family and I are saddened to hear of Dr. Hanusek's passing. He was an excellent physician, far ahead of his time. On a happier note, this memorial certainly captures his sense of humor. Good thoughts to the entire Hanusek family from ours.

We were friends of Terry and Gordon for only a few years towards the end of his life. I consider us fortunate just to have met. We became fast friends, enjoyed some dinners and cocktails together, nice memories. He is missed.
