My mother Rosemary (nee) Saunders remembered the family as they first arrived in Newcastle at the outset of the war (her father John) was at the University and they took them in for a couple of weeks. My mother had fond memories of this brief encounter

Hans was a brilliant, but quiet, humble man. He had a pressence that was warm and welcoming. He will surely be missed.

What I'll remember most about my grandfather are the five words he'd utter after any adventure, big or small, throughout his long, impressive life. "That was well worth while." It was.

Condolences from Claude, John, Steve Weil and Elika Shapiro (nee Weil.) We remember Hans as a highly cultured individual, an interesting conversationalist and a kind host.

Hans was a kind and brilliant man whose life was, and continues to be, an inspiration to me (his granddaughter) and to many. The more I learn of him, the more I realize exactly how modest and understated he was. I hope to live up to his example.
