Howard Sheckter Obituary

October 1950 - August 25, 2024 Howard Sheckter was born at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, CA in October of 1950 and was raised in the San Gabriel Valley (Glendora). He graduated Citrus College with an Associate of Science and followed his lifelong passion for weather, skiing, and the mountains, living in various parts of Colorado and the Sierras before settling down in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Howard started weather forecasting in Mammoth while working various jobs in the early 1980s. He broadcast on two local radio stations for Mammoth (KMMT) and Bishop (KIBS) along with Mammoth's local TV Channel 5. Howard married his wife, Donna, in the mid 1980s, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter (Natalie), son (Cliff), grandchildren (Jake and Charlie), brother (Rick), and 101-year old mother (Fran). Howard touched many lives as a realtor, weatherman, and member of the Mammoth and Bishop communities. He aired over 20,500 radio broadcasts and wrote over 3,800 blog posts (the "Dweeb report" available at mammothweather.com), which were followed with interest across the Eastern Sierra, Southern California, and world. He fought glioblastoma bravely and continued his weather reporting (online and radio) for over a year after diagnosis. He passed on August 25th in San Jose, CA with his family at his side. A celebration of life is planned for early October at Main Lodge on Mammoth Mountain. All are welcome to attend.

So sorry to hear about Howard. My condolences to his family and the rest of the Dweebs: We took his love of weather and made the decision to wait for the snow or go get the snow because of his forecasts. Thanks, Howard!

We skied Mammoth every year from 1977 to 2012. On one occasion Howard had forecast the day before that a very heavy snowstorm was about to hit the town the following morning with up to 4 ft in town and 5 to 7 ft on the lower slopes. Sure enough that morning at 5:00 am the flakes started to fall and we never left the Condo that day. Up to 3" per hour fell and by the time it was over in the evening our parking lot had over 3 ft of snow, most cars were completely buried. Canyon Lodge had 5 to 8 ft of snow. Howard was not just another weather person he was the legend of Mammoth weather.
It would be fitting for Mammoth Mtn to name something after him for his tremendous contribution of helping thousands of skiers everyday have the best skiing experience of their lives.

Howard will be missed!
I started reading his weather forecasts almost 25 years ago. They were the trusted source I went to.
I learned a lot about weather in general, and especially in the Eastern Sierras. Timed many a snowboard trip to Mammoth based on his storm predictions.
Howard will be greatly missed!

Wow! Such a shame, what a loss for his family and those that live and love the Eastern Sierras. What a contribution and legacy left though! Countless great days and memories were made possible by the work of this man. We will miss you buddy!

Have made Mammoth a yearly visit for 40+ years. Want to know what weather lies ahead? Forget the other weather services. 'Dweeb Report' was where to go. Guy was amazing. If Howard said his models indicated the chance of weather next Tuesday after 3...the flurries or drizzle started at 3:01. So sorry to hear this news. He was the BEST!

I have been following Howard's forecasts well over 15 years. He has the best extended forecasters around.Other forecasters from other ski resorts would even quote him& look up to him.His forecasts would often include nor cal& Tahoe as well.People from all over would benefit from his inside info on predicting weather far far in advance drought or big storms. He would also provide insight on a big storm that would be coming that major media cicuits would be broadcasting & let people know if it would be way less, mostly rain,a fraction of what was predicted or in some cases miss completely. Many famlies & businesses could plan around the forecasts. He could predict October & early November openings for ski resorts based on what he saw.My friend owns a ski shop& was able to help plan his ski season from Howard's weather predictions. He definitely has helped countless people to plan there trips safely thanks to his expert knowledge & predictions.Helping people who work in the ski industry know what to expect weeks away.He will be missed by many.

Former houseless Mammoth worker

September 2, 2024

Back in the '90's Howard gave me a ride when the deraillieur on my bike failed and I was pushing it up 203 with a big load of dirty laundry on the back. Nobody else was that kind. He asked where I had started from and I mentioned Laurel Spring. I smile thinking about how he didn't really believe that I had spent several El Nino winters out there. I only met him once, but he was very down-to-earth and decent. Mammoth had that spirit decades ago, but no more. Goobye Howard, goodbye Eastern Sierra.

We had a crop dusting business 50 miles N of Sacramento for 35 years and have taken in Howards forecasts plus others for many years. I'm very heart broken hearted as his forecasts and comments were taken seriously. God Bless you Howard. You were blessed with many talents and now you're on the other side of the clouds looking at us.
