Born January 31, 1916, Dr. Weinberger died peacefully at home on January 04, 2007.
On completing his Internal Medicine Residency at UC San Francisco in 1942, Dr. Weinberger served in England in W.W.II, where he met his wife, Pamela. He rose to the rank of Major, Medical Corps, U.S. Army Air Force and returned home to complete a Fellowship in Medicine and Rheumatology at Harvard University from 1947-1950.
Moving to Los Angeles, Dr. Weinberger joined the staff at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in 1950, and practiced medicine there until he retired in 1993. He held many leadership positions at Cedars, serving as Chief of the Arthritis Clinic for many years, as well as serving terms as Chief of Medicine, Chief of Rheumatology, and Chief of Staff.
In 1950, Dr. Weinberger also joined the faculty at UCLA Medical School, serving as UCLA's attending Physician and member of the Dean's committee at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital for thirty years. In 1972, he attained the rank of Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA where he served on the Boards of Advisors and Visitors.
He was also active in the Clinical Faculty Association, serving on the Executive Committee, and as Vice-President. He founded the Clinical Faculty Committee on Appointments and Promotions which he Chaired for four years. In addition to his other responsibilities, Dr. Weinberger was a Founding Fellow of the American Rheumatism Association and served as an officer of the Arthritis Foundation of Southern California for almost three decades, becoming a lifetime member of the Executive Committee.
In May 2002, he was honored with the Endowed Chair in Addiction Research at the Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction at U.S. San Francisco.
He was honored again in October 2006 as one of the founding fathers of the Division of Rheumatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Weinberger was much beloved by generations of patients for his wit, compassion and humanity. Friends and family alike recall his wonderful sense of humor and upbeat spirit. His fishing hobby generated many tall tales, but he really did catch a 380 pound Alaskan halibut.
He is survived by his wife Pamela, son Dr. Alan Weinberger, (wife Jennie), daughter Susan Ashley, (husband Peter), sister Irene Wolen, numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and grandchildren Lauren Weinberger and Ethan Ashley.
