Ira Greenberg Obituary

Greenberg, Ira Arthur June 26, 1924 - February 23, 2012 Ira's early years were formed in the Hebrew National Orphan Home, which he later wrote about in a book by that name. His educational trip went from Roosevelt High in Yonkers to the University of Oklahoma for a B.A. degree in Journalism, to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for an M.A. in English, to Cal State Los Angeles for an M.S. in Counseling, to Claremont Cal Grad School for a PhD. in Psychology 1967. A military service career stated with the draft in 1944 and he served in the 11thEng. Combat Battalion XXI Corp, ETO. His service triggered a lifetime relationship with numerous service organizations - Calif. State Mil. Res., U.S.Svc. Command, Emergency Disaster Assistance Corp; his most recent service, as a Colonel. Ira's work experiences were varied, from Reporter for the Columbia Ga. Enquirer and Louisville Courier-Journal to Supervising Psychologist at Camarillo State Hospital, Camarillo CA and later in Private Practice. He was an educator: Lecturer in Psychology, Chapman College; Assistant Prof. Cal State Northridge; Lecturer in Psychodrama, U.C. Ext Santa Barbara; Visiting Prof., edn., University of Nevada, Reno; Staff of the Calif. School of Prof. Psychology. With his expertise in Psychodrama established, he founded Behavioral Studies Institute, The Psychodrama Center for LA and the Group Hypnosis Center, Los Angeles. He was also seen as Producer and Host of the TV talk show "Crime and Public Safety", on Adelphia 1988. He belonged to professional organizations such as the Society of Clinical Hypnosis; the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama; American Psychological Association; Southern Calif. Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Other service organizations were the Peace Officers Assoc. LA, UDT/Seal Assoc.; Navy Amphibious Scouts and Raiders Assoc.; 11th Engr. Combat Battalion Assn. and the 78th Infantry Div. Assoc. He was an active member of the American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, VFW and MENSA. He was an avid collector of various weapons and also often competed in the SW Pistol League competitions. He authored "Psychodrama and Audience Attitude Change", "Psychodrama: Theory and Practice", "Group Hypnotherapy and Hypnodrama" and "The Hebrew National Orphan Home, Memories of Orphanage Life". At his death he was working on four other manuscripts, all with Army themes. What a varied and interesting life; Orphanage graduate, Army serviceman in ETO, WW11, Newspaper reporter, PhD. In Psychology, Organization Founder, TV Producer and Talk Show Host, Active organization member, Author and a good, generous person. He will be missed. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA, Friday March 23 at 10:15 A.M.

Ira was my father's counselor at Camarillo State Hospital in the late 1960s. They became friends. After my father's death in 1970, Ira befriended me. I will always remember what a help he was to me and to my father. Rest in peace, Ira, you dear, dear man.
