James Allen Obituary

August 4, 1939 - July 30, 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Willis Allen, MD, age 82, on Saturday, July 30, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Jim is survived by his partner of 30 years, Linda S. Metzner, PhD, Los Angeles. Jim and Linda had a wonderful, loving relationship, sharing a passion for family and sports, from hiking to golf, and a sense of adventure, from trekking in New Zealand to cruising through the Panama Canal and more.
After graduating from St. Charles Preparatory School in Ohio in 1957, Jim attended The Ohio State University, where he was a stellar athlete and a member of the 1960 National Championship Basketball Team. He earned his medical degree from the University of Guadalajara Medical School, then returned to his home state of Ohio to work as an emergency room physician at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus. In 1985, following a move to Los Angeles, Jim continued to work as an ER physician in addition to creating a family practice in Malibu.
Despite his many accomplishments, including 50 years as a physician, Jim lived modestly, but with a quiet passion and love for practicing medicine, his family, friends, and sports. Jim's love of adventure and athletics included running in 25 marathons around the world, the Iron Man competition in Hawaii and numerous golf tournaments. His demeanor was ever quiet and modest, but he was a fierce competitor.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Agnes A. Allen, and his brother, Major John Allen, USAF. He is survived by: his son, Joshua Allen; Linda's sons David (Ariane) Metzner and Jeffrey (Elise) Metzner; his sister, Lynne (Rich) Dalgewicz; his brother, Jeffrey P. Allen; many adoring nieces and nephews and much adored grandchildren.
We will miss him now and forever.
To honor Jim's memory, gifts can be made to The James Allen Family Scholarship Fund, St Charles Preparatory School, 2010 East Broad St. Columbus, Ohio or to
OPICA Adult Day Care Center, P.O. Box 641608, Los Angeles, California, 90064 or
