James Cheney Obituary

James "Jim" Cheney, 82, passed away on August 20, 2025, after a brief hospital stay with severe pneumonia. A devoted family man, natural connector, and inspiring leader, Jim left a legacy of kindness, leadership, and deep community involvement.
Born in Arcadia, California, Jim graduated from Claremont McKenna College and earned graduate business degrees from UCLA and USC. He enjoyed a long, distinguished career in banking, serving as COO of Community Bank, and later as President and CEO of both Mechanics Bank and Merchants Bank. He was admired for his steady leadership and generous mentorship.
Jim also cared deeply and served on many nonprofit and cultural organizations, including Hathaway Children Services, the Natural History Museum of LA, the LA Philharmonic, and the Palos Verdes Art Center.
Known for his warmth, humor, and ability to make others feel seen, Jim brought light wherever he went. He cherished his time on Balboa Island and adventure traveled the seven continents and seven seas with his beloved wife of 33 years, Carolyn ("CC").
Jim is survived by CC, his brother Dick (Linda), his children Ann (Roy) and Rob (Monika), and grandchildren Olivia and Jack. A private ceremony will be held on the waters around Balboa Island in his honor.
