Jane Willens Obituary

June 2, 1946 - December 1, 2023 Jane Albert Willens unexpectedly passed away on November 30 at the age of 77 in her Los Angeles home.

Daughter of famed Stanford and 49ers quarterback Frankie Albert and Martha Albert, "Janie" (as she was called during those years) inherited her father's winning spirit, capturing her first national title in tennis at age 14 and becoming the youngest ever California State triple crown holder. She debuted at Wimbledon at age 16 on Centre Court, then reached the quarterfinals there in 1965. She represented the U.S. in the 1966 Wightman Cup with doubles partner Billie Jean King, also winning numerous collegiate doubles titles for Stanford University with her partner and lifelong friend Julie Anthony. Janie fittingly capped her tennis career by winning two gold medals at her last event, the Pan American Games, in 1967. She subsequently became the first woman inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, joining her father, and was later also inducted into the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.

Following her tennis career, Jane married and devoted time to her three children. She then bravely decided to change her path. She returned to school and graduated with a Master's Degree from the USC School of Social Work. As a social worker, Jane demonstrated profound compassion and applied the same discipline and commitment to her work as she had exhibited in her tennis career. In 1993, her first position as an MSW was as a therapist at the Rape Treatment Center at what was then Santa Monica Hospital. She then moved to Palo Alto where she worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Stanford Hospital. In 2008, Jane returned to the Rape Treatment Center where she continued her extraordinary work with rape victims until the day she died, always claiming that the next year was going to be the year she retired. Jane was a truly gifted therapist. She was also an outstanding role model, supervisor, teacher and colleague for all who worked with her.

Jane's devotion to her life-changing work with victims of sexual assault was beyond measure due to her profound empathy, humility, kindness, modesty, and gentle manner. Few outside of her family ever learned about her athletic feats. And, even those closest to her did not fully grasp how many lives she affected, and how deeply, through her long-time work as a therapist at the Rape Treatment Center following her tennis career. Since her passing, Jane's friends and family have been overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of heartfelt messages they have received.
Jane is survived by her three children, Heather, Sara and Jake; her five adoring grandchildren, Cooper, Grace, Charlie, Sasha and Ryan; her loving sister, Nancy James; her beloved Labrador, Maddie and her trusty tortoise, Socrates.

She was dearly loved by all and will be missed beyond words.

Oh Jane. You were a wonder. Meeting you with Maddie at the dog park with our dog, Linus and having you to our house for dinner and talking and talking and talking. Always fun and consequential conversations. I´m so terribly sad to learn that you are gone from this earthly plain. Your love for your children and grandchildren was front and center. My heart is broken for them and for me. You were loved. Deeply loved.

Oh, Jane. I just found out of the news of your passing. You were an angel to me when I needed one the most. You gave me such care. We laughed, we cried - such an incredible person! Tears flowing from my eyes in gratitude. And for me to only find out NOW of your tennis talents. Humble and gracious, your kind spirit. An extraordinary person. I will forever be inspired by your impact on the world, and how you cared for me when I needed it the most.
Sending love to your family, and all who know you. I will not forget you. And I hope you visit me on the tennis court in the future. I love you & thank you

Being a few years younger than Janie, I looked up to the older junior players and was especially impressed than the elegant style that she played with. She was gracious both on and off the court. My brother and I got to know her better when we played the Pacific Northwest Circuit in 1970 and she was watching Ron play his matches. She was very supportive so I can imagine who compassionate she would be as a therapist. My loss for not getting to know her better. All the best to her family. Best regards, Steven Cornell

I met Janie on the beach, in Redondo Beach Ca. in 1965. I had a broken ankle and was spending laying on the beach and swimming in the ocean. Janie showed up one day and was doing the same as I. We struck up a conversation and started playing "checkers" on the beach. In our conversations, the subject of tennis came up and we agreed to play on Dr. Butt's home court when my ankle healed. It healed and we played, she beat me -- bad!! Down the road a bit I went to her Grandma's house, which was just above the beach where we had been laying. I asked her if Janie was home and she said "no" Janie is in Wimbledon. She asked me, "don't you know who Janie is"? I said, "yes, she's your Granddaughter". She then told me Janie's story. To this day I have never forgotten her and how much fun we had together. I am so sorry to learn today that she has passed away!!
My deepest condolences to her entire Family............Patrick

All my love and sympathy to her beloved children and grandchildren. I knew jane when she worked at Cedars Sinai Medical Center during her graduate school years....not only was she a professional contributor with great skill, she was a beautiful human being: inside and out. She spoke about her children so lovingly and respectfully and was an inspiration to us all to be a good and kind human being. She also knew how to be a good friend. I miss her.

The real worth of a person's life is what she/he did to better others, and who do we know that left the lasting footprint of care and compassion that Janie did? Her life dedicated to others made the World a better place, and that will last for decades.
God Bless Janie Willens and her family....

Just heard about Janies sudden death.. .. we didn´t know her well, but I was in awe of her life´s different paths ... I remember as an amazing tennis player back in the days, but her life´s work as a therapist , helping the most vulnerable children survive their traumas was what was the most impressive..such a difficult. Heartbreaking job..
So Heather, Larry and I are sending you our love and hugs, and want you to know how sorry we are for this sudden shattering loss.. we saw Michelle and David briefly tonight in Malibu, that´s where we heard this sad news.
Love Jo and Larry Feldman

Before I even got to the part about how humble Jane was, I was thinking that.she never shared any of those wonderful accomplishments. I worked with Jane when she was a new graduate from usc, such a hard, devoted worker.we maintained our friendship, and recently getting together with 2 other pals for lunch every 6 weeks. She was always interested and supportive to us, and a delight to be with.
I miss her friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
