Jay Grimes Obituary

Jay Grimes, dancer, Pilates teacher, of Studio City, Calif., passed away on July 29, after a prolonged battle with chronic heart and lung conditions. He was 84.
Born on March 25, 1940, in Bourbonnais, Ill., Jay was a man of many talents. He played piano professionally as a teenager, danced with the American Ballet Theatre, and performed in musical theater on Broadway and nationwide.
In the 1960s, Jay's dance profession led him to the late Joseph Pilates and his method of corrective exercise, known then as Contrology. Jay trained with Joe, and eventually taught alongside him and his wife, Clara, in New York. He moved to Los Angeles in 1974, and his direct connection to Joe made him a sought-after expert, ultimately shaping generations of Pilates teachers.
Jay was known for his youthful exuberance, sharp wit, style, humor, and humility. He was a lover of nature, travel, music, and literature. He enjoyed reading, taking long walks, and tending to his garden.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucile, and his siblings, John, Jennifer, and Janet. He is survived by his Pilates family, who continue to carry on his legacy.
In accordance with Jay's wishes, there will be no service.
