Jeffrey Rogers Obituary
January 21, 1942 - July 21, 2014 LAPD Lieutenant (Ret.) Jeffrey Arthur Rogers passed away from heart disease on July 21, 2014 at his Glendale, CA home. He was born in Queens, New York on January 21, 1942 to Clyde and Laraine Rogers. Jeff had a storied career with the Los Angeles Police Department that began in 1966 until his retirement in 1991 as the LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commander. As SWAT leader, Jeff had a profound impact on SWAT operations throughout law enforcement as an early pioneer in the development of SWAT. Jeff worked closely with then LAPD Chief Darryl F. Gates in developing the SWAT concept that has been replicated throughout United States law enforcement. Jeff was the consummate professional who successfully managed countless high profile incidents. He was recognized nationally and internationally as an innovator and tactician. Jeff also played a significant role in the development of groundbreaking counter-terrorism tactics that were used during the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles. He was highly recognized by the special units of the armed service for providing training to the United States Navy, Army and Marines on urban counter-terrorism tactics. He received numerous expressions of appreciation and gratitude from the military including SEAL Team 6. Jeff will be forever known as a leader who led, who valued friendship and was passionate about the law enforcement mission. He was without a doubt a unique individual, the likes of which will never be seen again. He will be remembered and sorely missed by his peers in law enforcement, his family and close friends. Jeff was a lifelong Southern Californian and a passionate Dodger and Kings fans. He attended many Dodger games dating back to the Coliseum days. Following retirement he focused on golf, auto racing and specialty cars, while maintaining his close association with the LAPD. He will be missed by his many friends at Lakeside Golf Club. Jeff is survived by Frank Rogers (brother), Pamela Rogers (sister in law), Jeffrey B. Rogers (nephew), Dana Ferguson (niece), Joel Rogers (nephew), and grandnieces Makayla and Marin Rogers. A memorial service celebrating Jeff's life will be held on August 6th at 4:00pm at Dodger Stadium in the Stadium Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeff's name can be made to the Los Angeles Police Museum, 6045 York Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90042 and the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation, 1880 North Academy Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
