Joan Keltus Obituary
Sister Joan died of natural causes on October 19, 2021. Born in Torrance, she was first employed by the U.S. Army in post-war Germany as a Recreation Director, then as a Refugee Worker by the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Upon her return to the U.S., Joan taught elementary school for the next eight years.
Sister Joan began her 60 years as a Sister of Social Service in 1961, with the majority of those years of ministry spent in Southern California. She began by coordinating the religious education program at St. Gerard Majella Parish, and eventually served as a pastoral minister in two other parishes in Los Angeles – Assumption and St. John. In the mid-1980's Joan's ministry turned to teaching once again, when she began teaching English as a second language (ESL) to adult learners.
Sister Joan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Cal. Berkeley in 1952, and a Master's Degree in Religious Studies from Immaculate Heart College in 1978. She also served her SSS community in a variety of settings, including formation of new members and teaching ESL at the Sisters' residence in Zacapu, Mexico.
Her religious community will especially miss Sister Joan's down-to-earth personality and care for those in need.
Viewing and remembrance service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday December 10th, and Funeral Liturgy to follow immediately. Both services will be held at the Sisters of Social Service, 4316 Lanai Road, Encino. Following a light lunch, a graveside service will be held at 1:30 at Calvary Cemetery. To assist with planning, we ask that you respond to 818.285.3364 by noon Monday, December 6th with your name and the number of persons coming with you.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Social Service.
