Joel Lish Obituary

March 11, 1935 - March 5, 2024 Founder and Conductor, Palisades Symphony

Joel B. Lish, Founder and former Music Director of the Palisades Symphony, passed away quietly on March 5th, surrounded by his family. He would have turned 89 on March 11th. Joel was born in Brooklyn, but moved to California with his family at an early age. His father was a musician, and Joel and his brother Merrill were given music lessons. While attending Verdugo Hills High School, Joel wanted to play in a string quartet that was being formed. However, he was one of three violinists wanting to play in that quartet, so Joel was persuaded by a teacher to try the viola. As it turned out, he excelled on the viola!
After graduating from high school when he was just 16, Joel enrolled in the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. Later he enlisted in the United States Air Force after being told that he would be able to join the Air Force Symphony. This turned out to be a false promise, but he still made the most of his four years in the Air Force. While stationed in Denver, Joel studied viola and played with an orchestra. During his last two years in the Air Force he was stationed in Okinawa. At the request of some of the local musicians he started a small group of string players and taught himself to conduct. They played several concerts for the locals and the service members. When he left Okinawa, another service member continued his work. Joel was surprised to learn many years later that this group eventually evolved into the Okinawa Symphony and that he was considered the founder of that orchestra!
After his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1957, Joel attended CSUN and earned a Master's degree in teaching. He taught music at Nobel Junior High School in Northridge for several years, and then in 1965 he was invited to teach music at Palisades High School, which had opened only four years earlier. In 1970 Joel became Chair of the Music Department of Palisades High School, where he remained until he retired from teaching in 1995.
While still in his first year of teaching at Palisades High, Joel started the Palisades Symphony in early 1966. He had some very good music students at Palisades High, and he started the orchestra in order to provide them with an additional opportunity to play orchestral music. In this endeavor, Joel was incredibly fortunate to meet Eva Holberg, a Pacific Palisades music-lover and volunteer, who eventually became the President of the orchestra and ran it successfully for more than 50 years until her death at age 91 in 2022. The Palisades Symphony continues to thrive in the community. The orchestra presents seven concerts every year which are always free and open to the public. Two of these concerts are in collaboration with the Brentwood-Palisades Chorale, and one is a showcase for young local artists. The orchestra welcomes community members who enjoy playing orchestral music.
Joel's retirement from full-time teaching allowed him to devote more time to his other career as a professional violist. Joel has performed casual, strolling, chamber, and orchestral music with many ensembles throughout the Los Angeles area. For many years he was an entertainer at the Jewish Home for the Aged in Reseda. He sometimes worked on cruise ships as a solo violist, taking requests from passengers as they were enjoying their dinner. He especially enjoyed his work with Murray Korda's "Monseigneur Strings" – a group of musicians who were renowned in the Los Angeles area for playing for high-end society functions for presidents and Hollywood royalty. Joel was an expert at hearing the harmony and creating his own inner lines on the viola, weaving in and out of the music as the other string players played the melody. Joel also participated in many studio recordings and films for motion picture and television.
His teaching and conducting led him to work with performing organizations of all age groups. For several years he conducted the Los Angeles Mandolin Orchestra, producing a recording of that group. He also mentored student groups at the Crossroads School for several years. He loved conducting the Floating Strings, a group of musicians, both amateur and professional, who enjoyed the chance to gather in various locations during the summers to read through music for string ensembles.
In early June of 2011 Joel received a very unexpected call. The Casa Italiana Opera Company desperately needed him to conduct its performance of "Pagliacci" the next day! Joel had never conducted that opera before. He spent that evening studying the score. The next day, with only a minimum amount of time for a quick run-through of the music with the orchestra, he led a very successful performance of the opera. He continued as the conductor for Casa Italiana Opera Company for several years, conducting several major operas.
In addition to all these activities, Joel created Middle Fiddle Music, a small music publishing company, that sold his wonderful arrangements of classical works for small string ensembles – duets, trios and quartets.
Joel was an essential, deeply-connected member of the Los Angeles classical music community. His leadership of the Palisades Symphony always stood at the center of his activities.
Joel leaves behind his wife, cellist Jan Kelley-Lish. Their paths had crossed probably hundreds of times over the last 60 years, and they married almost 10 years ago. Joel was her perfect partner. Together they played duets, worked on Joel's arrangements, and enjoyed spending time and playing chamber music with their friends. During covid they collaborated with their close friends Judy, Jeff and Denisa and new friend Josh, and as the "DJs" they presented more than 40 patio concerts in Studio City. Joel also leaves 2 sons – Dr. Benjamin Lish (Gigi) of Ventura and Michael Lish (Kristin) of Bend, Oregon. He also leaves one grandchild, Noa Lish, of Olancha, his sister-in-law Marganit Lish, and three nieces – Dina Reisman, Tamar/Tammy Lish Spencer, and Etsuko Yoshida. Joel's first wife, Kyoko Lish, passed away in 2006. Joel also leaves hundreds of devoted friends and admiring former students who seemed to turn up almost every place where he went. And although he has gone from his beloved Palisades Symphony and is greatly missed by all of the musicians, he left his orchestra in the very capable hands of the new President Denisa Hanna and the new permanent conductor Dr. Maxim Kuzin. There will be a memorial service held for Joel in the next few weeks. Details will be posted on the orchestra website.

I´m thinking of Joel on what would have been his 90th birthday and wishing he was still here with us to conduct a beautiful concert to celebrate. And that I still had the opportunity to present him with my favorite Hansens marble cake with chocolate chocolate chip filling that he so enjoyed. You are very much missed dear Joel. Thank you for the music.

Joel's Palisades Symphony is putting on this concert Sunday night in his honor.<br />Free admission, as always.

Joel Lish will be remembered by me as my teacher, my colleague, my conductor in many orchestras, and as a remarkable and tireless educator who was constantly making opportunities for children and the community to learn and play music. I knew him since I was a child and it seemed he would always be here.
The first time I met him I was 8 years old, playing in his after school orchestra (his assistant was Becky R.), As a young teenager and Pali High student, I have many happy memories from my time playing in the Palisades Symphony. I learned much of the great classical repertoire there, discovered well and lesser known pieces that became my favorites, and played Handel's Messiah for the first of many times. It was also a place where students, professionals and amateur players could socialize and learn from each other, an experience that made me love playing in orchestras (uncommon in a violinist!).
Joel also guided my music education at Pali, looking out for opportunities for me to grow as a player and making sure I knew about them. He always programmed good music for school concerts, like the Mozart Requiem, or a Bach Brandenburg Concerto, often collaborating with the choir, (taught by Linda B., another high-energy person), and I also had much fun playing in the musicals every Spring with my friends. When he lost his patience with us he was still even-tempered and laughing the next minute.
Even after I started playing jobs with him, he was still "Mr. Lish" to me. He is missed. My condolences to his sons, and Jan.

Joel Lish was the able conductor, for many years until it disbanded, of the Los Angeles Mandolin Orchestra, an 'adult class' taught weekly, through LA Unified School District during 1970's-'90's; it was an (historic) assemblage of mandolin-family playing, classical local musicians, at Fairfax HS evening classes, which played the Classics, using a long-inherited 4 filing cabinets of orchestral scores collected from NYC mandolin orchestra and other sources; he led that group of curmudgeons, very well. He was my intro to 'classical music' and those arrangements still ring in my ears and now i also have the lp's/cd's of those classics, for greater scrutiny and enjoyment; his humor and wit penetrated my simpler approach to music and made me a better, more thoughtful person through today! Thanks Joel for your attitude and patience which gave your musicianship great credibility; I needed what you gave each week and your jokes stimulated my attention: thanks for being there !

I know many, if not most, of his former students have shared similar sentiments, but Joel Lish was a huge influence in my life. He showed me so much more than any other teacher ever did. It was due to his influence that I became serious about playing the flute, and went on to college as a Music/flute performance major. Joel was a very important person to me during my high school years. He contributed significantly to my developing self-confidence and self-esteem, which have obviously served me well throughout my adult life.
He cared, and will always be remembered for the impact he has had in my life.

I am so saddened to hear about Joel. My prayers for Mr.Lish´s family and friends. When I was four he taught me the recorder and how to read music. Then later as a Pali student I played violin in the orchestra 1981-84 and was 1st chair for a short time.I also played in his palisades symphony. Joel was such an inspiration. I specifically remember working on Westside story for Pali. I have many fond memories.

I realized after Joel passed that I am probably still playing the cello today because of him and the Palisades Symphony. And therefore, he is also the reason I had the courage to play a meditative (and unaccompanied) version of Kol Nidre for the High Holy Days in 1987, and have been playing every year since! In 1978 I heard about the orchestra and went to a rehearsal not having played for a year or so since I left New York. He sat me in the second seat, right under his baton, for my "audition" and I guess I did ok...he welcomed me as a member of the cello section of the Palisades Symphony! I have enjoyed playing in the orchestra he founded except for injuries ever since. Thank you Joel! I am forever grateful. I will miss you.

I am very sorry to hear that Joel has passed away.
I had many students over the years who had the opportunity to solo with the Palisades Symphony.
The last one was in 2023, Camila Blank, who was given the opportunity to play the 1st movement of the Mendelssohn Concerto with the orchestra, as one of the several talented Concerto Competition winners.
Joel and the orchestra did a fine job for all.
A truly wonderful memory for Camila.

A wonderful exemplary life and such a terrific musical force! I first encountered Joel when he allowed me, an adult student cellist, and my son Tim, a 9 year old violinist, to join the orchestra. Over the course of two years, Tim went from back of the second violins, to third chair in first violins, and then over several years, to win young artists competitions three times. All with me as the mom in the cello section. Joel was so enthusiastic and supportive of us both, and Tim loved this first exposure to an amazingly wide orchestra repertoire as a player, with adults. Tim is now a professional violinist and composer, and I still play cello as an amateur (and sometimes quartets with fellow Palisades symphony members from those days). My condolences to Jan and Joel’s family, but I know that we will celebrate his legacy with joy, not sadness, since Joel had the chance to do what he loved with Jan and friends almost to the end.

So sorry to hear of this loss to the music community. I´ve known Joel for years and he was not only such a great music educator and conductor but a sincerely good-hearted human being. I would occasionally be called upon to play bass in the Palisades Orchestra under his baton and several students from my conservatory won concerto contests and were featured soloists with that orchestra. PI will miss him a lot!

I'm so so sad to have learned of Joel's passing. As we're all seeing through these comments, Joel was a major player in the lives of Los Angeles musicians. He was a first mentor to me: one of two conductor's that responded "yes" when I asked if there was any chance I could assist him as a conductor. Joel was a great musician - he was funny! Orchestras loved his sense of humor and clear understanding of what he wanted out of the music. Joel helped people. He gave musicians a chance: and for me, he put the proverbial arm around my shoulder and said "this is what conducting is about" and I'll never forget him. Where ever you are Joel, thank you for being a mentor to me. Thanks for being my friend. Thanks for taking my calls and hearing my trials and tribulations and offering guidance.

Mr Lish Thank you sooo much for having patience with me. I missed a lot of school due to my mommy´s passing and my dad being hearing impaired. You were the only teacher I would share my personal problems with.. You always encouraged me to stay focused. I remember crying telling you how hard it was to concentrate at school, because I kept thinking about my mom. You kept reminding me of how my mom would expect me to stay strong. I was hoping to see you right before Pali 40 School reunion... just to say thank you.. well only four months to go. Well Thank you.

I was just talking to Nadine Luke a few months ago about him!! I was hoping to look him up when I come home!!
Oh Mr Lish he had so much patience with me. He pushed me to become a Majorette at Palisades Charter High School
Thank you for sharing.. Will..
i keep thinking I have time to thank such wonderful teachers praying for his family´s strength to carry them through this grieving time.

Joel, you did so many favors (mitzvahs) for many of us in your lifetime. Thank you; I am one of the beneficiaries. It was through Joel Lish that I found my way into the classical music world of Los Angeles. As an injured violin/violist who had moved to Los Angeles, as I got better, Joel was the person whom I cold-called (looking for private students) and who pointed me in the direction of the Ladies Choice String Quartet, and their leader, Harriet Katz (also RIP). This led me into many circles of friends, wedding gigs, and a musical life. Further, there was an episode wherein Joel and I both wanted to buy the same Recycler-advertised viola. Joel kindly stepped back and let me buy it, even though he had tried the viola out first. Palisades Symphony - his amazing and continuing legacy - continues to be a weekly musical home for so many of us as we continue to grow as musicians wherein we get to recreate the works of musical geniuses. My love and condolences to Joel's wife Jan and Joel's family.

Palisades High School and community were indeed fortunate to have had Joel as an excellent music teacher and also a founder and director of the Palisades Symphony. I was impressed with his love of music and dedication which influenced many students and adults, giving them an appreciation for music and the opportunity to perform. I feel privileged to have known this gentleman, friend and colleague.

With the passing of first Eva and now Joel, a golden era has well and truly ended. They are so much missed and will be loved forever. Thankfully their spirit continues in the beautiful music which will continue to be made by their orchestra, with which I had the privilege of performing many times under the masterful baton of Maestro Lish. He had the great good fortune to continue doing what he so loved right up until almost the very end, and we were all so fortunate to have had him for so long. May his memory be for a blessing, and Eva's too.

Wow, how many decades have I've known you? It was really fun being in your orchestra. I can't remember if I played cello or bass for you... I also enjoyed subbing for you several times. Geez I can't remember which group that was.
I'm so glad that I saw both you and Jan at the last Bellflower Symphony concert. I can't believe that was only a short time ago. Rest in peace my friend.

I was a student at Palisades High when Joel began teaching there in 1965, and I was sitting in the cello section at the first rehearsal of the Palisades Symphony the following year. Joel was a fine music teacher for an undisciplined young player. His office record collection included such seditious material as P.D.Q. Bach mixed in with the Three Bs, something that fed the natural anarchic strains of adolescence. At the same time, he allowed interested music students to eat lunch in the orchestra room, which freed us from mingling with the general population and allowed us to play chamber music instead. (Some of the same string quartets I butchered as a high student would reappear on programs I´d perform as a member of a professional quartet 15 years later.)

Having never learned an honest trade, I became a freelance cellist in LA, and continued to cross paths with Joel as a member of the Monsignor Strings and other pickup groups as well as recording sessions, where I had to train myself not to call him Mr. Lish. The greatest pleasure was when Joel invited me to perform two concertos over the years.

Before one such performance, he took me aside and said, "You´re not Feuermann and I´m not Bernstein, but let´s have a good time!" I believe that despite his dry caustic humor, Joel Lish understood a fundamental truth about music that is too often unrecognized, and which underlined the enduring success of both the Palisades Symphony over its 50+ years, as well as Joel´s own excellence as a player, which always made it a pleasure to work with him: music is fun, yes, but it´s also a vital spiritual force that people need to have full lives.

I send my sympathies to Jan and the rest of Joel´s family, and embrace the rest of the large tribe who were lucky to have been influenced by the musical values, humor and warmth of this wonderful human being.

I was one of Mr Lish´s students. I played flute in the orchestra band and marching band. He put me in charge of caring for and distributing the pali hi marching band uniforms. He was a great teacher, conductor, and task master. He could be funny but also quite serious if a student didn´t try to perform a piece to the best of his ability. He didn´t tolerate slackers. I am sad to hear of his passing and I send condolences to his family and fellow musicians. He will be missed. Mary Poston, Boise Idaho.
