I will always remember Mr. Merriweather's big beautiful eyes and his beautiful smile. He could tell a story without saying a word because you could just look into his eyes and see his smiling face. The hiccups will always remind me of him too because sometimes he'd get the hiccups right before he said something. We always got along fine.

Mr. Merriweather was a very "thought out" person. He would think about what he'd say before he spoke. He was honest about who he liked and who he disliked. He never lost his temper if something upset him. Also, I think he would have chased the women here if he could have!

Mr. Merriweather was extremely polite and very understanding, never demanding. He was always very nice and always smiling, never mean.
If he didn't feel well, he would never complain. He was very charismatic.

I will remember Mr. Merriweather as a strong family man, a fighter, and a man that loved his God. He was pleasant and not afraid to state his mind. He would always apologize when he discovered he misjudged. :)

I always saw my grandpa working hard at what he loved, golf and working at his shoe shop, and that inspired me to do what I love to do and start my own business instead of working for someone else. My grandpa was always happy to see me when I came to L A to visit him.

Johnny was a very strong man. I am an in-law of his, and as he got older I referred to him as the old man (behind his back). He lived a long life and lived it well. He carried himself in a respectful manner and I always respected him. He loved my barbeque dinners and loved my sweet potato pies.

Johnny and I were neighbors and good friends for lots of years. I am proud to have known a 'black' man who was part of history in Los Angeles at a time when things were dificult and yet he maintained a great reputation and represent blacks right, and with dignity. He was one of the best at his trade.

He was always a good man and a people person. He was my neighbor and I grew up with his kids. When I was about 4 years old he nicknamed me "Muscles" when he saw me carrying a lot of groceries into the house and I had a big bottle of apple cider on my pinky finger. He said he didn't think anyone so little could carry a big bottle of apple cider on their pinky. He called me Muscles from then on. I got to spend time with him these last few years and I will never forget him.

He always made me laugh. He always had something funny to say. People gravitated to him because they enjoyed being around him. Even though I was always prepared to pay him when whenever I took him shoes to repair for me, he'd always graciously decline accepting money from me. He gave me a beautiful Gucci purse and a beautiful Louis Vuitton purse, and a small briefcase years ago, just to be nice. He treated me like I was his grand daughter. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

I will always remember Johnny's sense of humor and how he could really make Brenda mad when he teased her and he'd be laughing the entire time. I remember he always bought Brenda things that were top notch and he taught her etiquette. He always said "yes" when she asked if Daphne and I could spend the night, and he was crazy about my cooking. He loved oxtails.

Johnny was my grandpa and a man who taught me the power of laughter. There wasn't a time that I can remember where my grandpa didn't have something humorous to say in the efforts of making someone have a better day. I will always remember my grandpa for that wonderful gift of making people laugh he passed on to me, and he will be missed by all whose hearts he touched.

I will always remember how when I was a little girl walking down the street on Sundays, Johnny would have on the sharpest clothes to play golf. One day he was putting his golf clubs in the trunk of his car and I noticed he was wearing the sharpest brown and white golf shoes. He came to my daddy's 91st birthday party last year, and I am so happy I was at his 89th birthday party.

I always called Johnny "Brother Merriweather." He was a life long mentor to me and was like a family member. He inspired me in many ways. Although Brother Meriweather and I never played golf together, I always asked him about golf and he ensured me that we would play one day. Thanks to his inspiration I have become a very good golger. When I was a high school student I went out of my way to take my shoes to him in LA to fix for me and I would always be amazed at what he could do to an old pair of shoes. I was also amazed at his machinery and would asked him questions about how the machines operated. I admire Brenda for being his right hand in his waning years. I thank him for creating all of his children who are like my siblings. And I thank his wife Madeline for giving me the recipe for a delicious hamburger/noodle dish. He will be well missed by the Davis family.

It still hasn't hit. I can't believe that Johnny is gone. When I met him, Michael was crawling and before I knew it we were close friends. Johnny was my closest friend and it's going to take a long time for me to come to terms with his sudden passing. Not one time during all those years were we ever angry with each other. I'm going to miss him.

I will miss Johnny forever. We were close friends for over 45 years and I will always laugh at the way he would always tell me "You should have done that when you were at home," whenever I asked him for the bathroom key when I was at his shop visiting him. No matter how long I had been visiting, he'd always tease me before he gave me the key.

As a young girl I remember living on the same street with Mr. Merriweather, and I always thought what a handsome man he was, but he looked Chinese to me. I'm so proud of the black man he was. It is a honor to of know a successful black man that had not just 1 shoe repair shops, but several shops. He fought hard to the end. May he RIP.
