I was playing Byrd's LP "Joe Byrd & The Field Hippies - The American Metaphysical Circus" as a young teen at the Catacombs Coffee House in Sylvania, Ohio in 1969, and followed this one-of-a-kind recording for decades - I bought a sealed copy in 1976 that remains unopened through this day.
I had a chance to meet Joseph after seeing his filing in the 2002 Napster court case and contacting him via the College Of The Redwoods in Eureka where he had began teaching. Eventually I visited him several times in Northern California and Oregon, and got to know many of his friends and contemporaries from his earlier band The United States Of America including Dorothy Moskowitz, Craig Woodson, Rand Forbes, and Gordon Marron, as well as any number of other musical and related friends. Never have I otherwise been introduced to a circle of such brilliant and gifted people. And never have I met someone the equal of Joseph Byrd in being so incredibly endowed with the ability to know and command such a huge range of musical styles and bring them to instantly bear as he saw fit. He was also a brilliant cook/chef and superb writer of both fiction and non-fiction work. We shared many hundreds of emails and letters, hundreds of phone calls, and so much more I will be grateful for for the remainder of my time on this planet.
The term "musical genius" gets thrown around far too frequently these days - Joseph Byrd was the real, real deal. R.I.P. my friend.
