Kenneth Narahara Obituary

September 14, 1944 - July 24, 2023 Kenneth A. Narahara was born on Sept. 14, 1944 in Topaz, Utah. His father, Shigemori Narahara and mother, Mary Kaneko Narahara were among the 120,000+ Americans of Japanese descent forced to relocate their families during WWII. Kenneth and his two brothers, Mr. Gerald Narahara and Mr. Dean Narahara eventually grew up in deep south Texas on the vegetable and citrus farm their parents purchased and ran until their retirement.
Kenneth graduated from Rice University in 1970, followed by graduation from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School with an MD. He progressed to specialize in Cardiology. He served in the USAF at The School of Aerospace at Brooks AFB, Texas from 1973 to 1975, with the rank of Captain, where he provided monitoring and treatment to Air Force pilots and other flight staff, including their testing in a human centrifuge and altitude chambers. He then joined the staff at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he practiced Cardiology.
Dr. Narahara was the longstanding Chief of Cardiology at Harbor UCLA Hospital, where he managed patients with cardiac disease and instructed and mentored many classes of intern and fellows. Following his retirement, Dr. Narahara volunteered weekly to read patient EKG's and instruct aspiring cardiologists on the EKG interpretive nuances and critical considerations. He was additionally a world-renowned expert on Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and its pharmacologic therapy alternatives, participated in numerous, associated clinical trials, and had, earlier in his career, pioneered the field of Nuclear Cardiology, now used worldwide for the diagnosis of cardiac disease. There are numerous medical publications, regarding cardiac disease diagnosis and treatment, authored by Dr. Narahara, in world-class medical journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Circulation.
In addition to his expertise in Cardiology, and the associated global meetings with his colleagues, Dr. Narahara traveled extensively in the US and abroad, with a passion for photography. He was fascinated with the Anasazi Indian tribe and their abandoned dwellings in Arizona, which he researched and visited several times. He also visited most of the US National Park and spent considerable time in the Mojave Desert's National Preserve, which he loved. He was also a fan of dragster racing, and regularly attended the Pomona, CA, races on weekends.
Kenneth leaves a profound void in his family and friends, who reveled in his "Zen of Ken", his unique personality and brilliant mind, and his unfailing kindness and generosity. He was a very private person who managed to engender strong kinship in so many.

I worked for Dr. Narahara in 1987 as a Research Assistant/Programmer at Harbor-UCLA REI (as it was known then). He was a good man who took a chance on a young kid straight out of college. He gave me my start in the working world, and I will never forget him for that. He did have a sly sense of humor to go with his quiet demeanor and great intelligence. Always treated me with respect.
I'm sorry I'm finding this now a year after he passed. He did a lot for a lot of people. May he rest in peace.

I knew "Kenny" as he was called in High School. All the students were in awe of his brilliance and quiet yet quick sense of humor. Our high-school had its 100th anniversary a year ago and Ken came home to attend. Our group had the best time and now I will cherish the time we got to spend with Ken. He was a treasure!

My Sincere Condolences to the Narahara Family.
Dr. Narahara as a new Grad RN many moons ago; I was would be in "awe" when I would listen in on your 4W rounds (and also a tad scared of you). I´m glad that through my Cardiology Nursing Journey I was able to see that not only were you so incredibly smart but you had a jovial quirkiness.
May you RIP Dr. Narahara

Dr. Narahara. I took this photo of you at your retirement party at Harbor UCLA Medical Center 4 West. It depicts you so well. Quietly and keenly observing, and probably reflecting at this tremendous juncture in your life. Thank you for the many years of mentorship and leadership. You leave a lasting influential impact on so many lives. Rest in Peace.

I am so sorry for your loss . I miss your birthday celebrations were several nurses from CCU and PCU would wait to see his response to the gift of ties. He would always make sure to show the nurse whose tie he was wearing acknowledged he was wearing their tie . It made him so happy . We would love to see his smile. We remember him always having his camera at the ready to take many pictures of his birthday celebration. We will miss your kind heart and warm smile .. Rest in peace . Your friend Elvia

I am so saddened to hear Ken is no longer with us. I had the privilege of cutting his hair every other week for 20 years. You will be missed until we meet again.
