Kurt Lewin Obituary

October 9, 1934 - October 4, 2016 Judge Kurt Lewin (Retired) passed away on October 4, 2016 at his home in Henderson, NV. Born in Berlin, Germany on October 9, 1934, his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1939. He was raised in Van Nuys, CA and served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. He earned his law degree from UCLA in 1963, and after several years in private practice, was appointed to the L.A. Superior Court in 1982 by then Gov. Jerry Brown. While on the bench, he presided over many high profile civil cases. An avid fisherman, he was a fully licensed sea captain who skippered commercial fishing vessels in coastal waters. Kurt also enjoyed fly-fishing in the Eastern Sierra mountains. He retired in 2001 and moved with his wife Brandie to Henderson but continued to participate in the California Assigned Judges Program for the next 12 years. Afterwards he volunteered at the USO in Las Vegas. Kurt enjoyed a hearty debate and was a brilliant conversationalist. He loved entertaining and is rumored to have mixed a "mean" margarita! He is survived by his wife Brandie and daughters Kristi Haddock and Stefanie Handler and sons-in-law Alan Haddock and Lt. Colonel Ted Handler USMC. The family requests that donations be made in his name to charities of their choice.

Kurt was in law school when I was an undergraduate at UCLA. We became close friends and he often was my 'date' when I needed a perfect gentleman to take me somewhere. I adored him. He was smart, funny, and totally charming. I felt I finally had an older brother.

We are blessed to have known Kurt and he will remain in our hearts and memories always.

"Pray about everything; tell God your needs... If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus. " Philippians 4:6-7

I read with sadness the obituary about Kurt. My family knew his family in Van Nuys We both had chicken farms and his mother Katchen was my mother's best friend. I always read about Kurt's many accomplishments. I remember him as such cute little boy and it is hard to believe that I am 90 and still doing ok and so many of my peers are no longer with us. I wish the family my best , Hilda Anker Fogelson

I am so sorry for your loss. So many Great childhood/teenage memories with your family. I know he will be greatly missed. And, I'm pretty sure I witnessed him making a mean margarita a time or two. Love to you all❤❤
