Leon Shulman Obituary

SHULMAN, Leon Dr. Leon Shulman, 94. Born Sept. 1913, died Nov. 16, 2007. Well-known Obstetrician - delivered over 5,000 babies. He passed away at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. He died ostensibly from pneumonia, but probably was due to a broken heart after losing his wife of 56 years, Priscilla Shulman, seven months earlier. He was born in Los Angeles, California. Shulman followed in his father's footsteps as a surgeon, who was a heart and lung doctor. Leon received his B.A. from UCLA and M.D. from USC. His residency was completed in Obstetrics at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Hudson County, New Jersey. He was on staff at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica from 1945 until his retirement in 1980. He chaired the ObGyn Department for three years in the late 1960s. Shulman was also on staff at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and USC Women's Hospital. Shulman was a member of the prestigious Pacific Coast ObGyn Society and was President of Los Angeles ObGyn Society in the 1970s. Despite the respect and accolades of his peers, Shulman was most proud of each one of the over 5,000 babies he helped bring into this world. Some were children of movie actresses and some were not. Each baby was beautiful to Shulman. Leon Shulman always had a joke to tell, a pun to make, and a snappy retort. He and his wife retired to San Diego. They were surrounded by dear friends when they departed this world. By his request, there were no memorial or funeral services. Please sign the guest book at www.legacy.com/latimes.

Priscilla and Leon were such wonderful neighbors. I am going to miss our monday and thursday get togethers. Leon always had many interesting stories to relate. He and Priscilla were such a happy couple. He was an excellent caregiver to his wife.

Leon Shulman was a good neighbor, the kind of neighbor everyone would want to have. Always a joke to share. A man who adored his wife, Priscilla, a gentleman with excellent manners. There should be more men like him! He was one of the good guys. And we miss him - and Priscilla - very much, because you can't think of one without remembering the other.
With love,
Sandy, Loren, and Emma Lopata

We only met for a few minutes, but I guess you were my oldest friend. It was July 17, 1951 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. Your's was the first face I ever saw. I don't remember it, but from all I read, I'm sure it was kind and gentle.
Thanks for being there when I really needed you.
My Mom tells me that you were a good man and a great physician.
Thanks again for a great start.
