Leonard Zimmelman Obituary

March 4, 1947 - April 9, 2023 We are saddened to announce the passing of Len on Sunday April 9th from the insidious consequences of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. After his diagnosis in early 2022, Len was steadfastly determined to remain in his gorgeous home and in a neighborhood overflowing with extraordinary friends who could not do enough to make his life as pleasant as possible. Some of the highlights in the last year were playing cards with his poker buddies, constantly maintaining his remarkable garden, visiting the nearby lake and passing out treats to the dogs who came to recognize him.
Len was born and raised in Los Angeles. He attended his local grade school and junior and high schools. In the late 1960's, he graduated from UCLA and then received his Master's Degree at Art Center College of Design in L.A., where he later taught classes to grateful students.
During Len's career as a creative and art director, he was responsible for some memorable ads, including the humpback whale breaching in the Pacific Life commercial and being assigned to manage Gary Coleman, whose ads for Cash Call can be found on YouTube. He was the creative director for commercials for Dole. Playboy was another client. He enjoyed teasing his brother with stories about work he did for "Hugh".
Len was an incredible son, husband, brother, uncle, stepfather, grandfather, brother-in-law and devoted friend. He is already deeply missed.
At his request, there will be no funeral. Donations can be made to the ALS Association http://weboc.alsa.org/goto/LenZimmelman or the Alzheimer's Association.

Mexico too Alaska to New York
Going out for Martinis and garlic bread...and live theater... and not to mention Las Vegas at the last minute for fun.. his generosity there are not enough words to describe it. He had the best 50th birthday party ever in Las Vegas. len was kind and generous, and a hoot to be with.

With Len a production day was never the same day twice nor a dull day. Wouldn't have it any other way. He will be truly missed by many.

I´d say Len and I had the chance to work together. But that´s not it. We had the chance to live life together through work. Work was a means. It paid the bills to allow life to happen. Good times, great adventures, better stories because of him. No day was complete if you didn´t give your all and your best. And if you didn´t take a minute to appreciate the roses around you. Thanks Len
Your smile will live on through the smiles you created in others.

Dear Alan, so sorry to hear of Len's passing. I remember out time in the Boy Scouts and I recall him being a kind person and artistically talented. I was happy to read, in his obituary and in the comments posted here, that many others felt the same way.

Len´s smile and laugh were always a comfort to our daily encounters, he was like a big brother to all the younger creatives at LDP. He was a fashionable breath of fresh air that left a gentle impression on everyone. Sending love to his friends and family.

I will truly miss Len. He was not only my boss/creative director at K/F, but my friend and mentor. He gave me my very first start and believe in a graphic design intern from CSUN who wanted to make a name for himself in the world of advertising. May you rest in peace.

Len was a lovely human. I hope his close relations are blessed by his memory. I know I am. He taught me the importance of dark chocolate over milk chocolate in a good loaf of banana bread.

Leonard was a wonderful friend for so many years. We rode to work together in the early days of k/d/p, the ad agency we worked for. And shared many good times. He is in a better place now. My love to you, Leonard.
