Luke O'Reilly Obituary

June 21, 1948 - June 21, 2017 Luke O'Reilly was born on 21st June 1948 in Liverpool, England, and succumbed to cancer after a brave fight on 21st June 2017 in Los Angeles. From the earliest age Luke showed natural yet extraordinary sporting abilities. His parents' interest in alpine sports led him to skiing and he quickly became competitive. Water-skiing followed soon after. He started picking up prizes and awards from the earliest of ages. But it was skiing that became his 'main event' and he was picked for the British Olympic ski-team in the Winter Olympics of Grenoble, France, in February 1968. At that time, one of the youngest Alpine skiers in a Winter Olympics team. Later that same year Luke arrived at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire - joining the Heorot fraternity where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) and graduated early in 1971. Soon after his graduation Luke skipped over to his parallel interest - music, and became a Radio DJ in Philadelphia at WMMR (93.3 FM). In his element in the days when you were encouraged to express your interest in the music you played, Luke's English accent sat well with the listeners in Philly. Then on a trip back to England in 1972 Luke went to an Al Stewart concert and was so taken by his performance and potential that he persuaded Al to change management - and so Luke became a music manager. This partnership lead to Al's highly acclaimed "Past, Present & Future" album. Luke worked closely with Janus Records in the US and that team spawned the globally-acclaimed single "Year of the Cat" and it's platinum-selling album of the same name in 1976. Luke's Kinetic Productions Ltd was a talent management and record production company and included artists like The Chieftains, Shot in the Dark and Joe Strummer. He also had highly successful involvement with UK band The Fixx, carried him into the '80s representing US management - where the band had a sequence of four major album successes peaking with the top 5 single "One Thing Leads to Another" from the top 10 "Reach the Beach" album. In the early '90s, and for nearly 20 years, Luke ran a software company called Concertworks that capitalised on his experience as a manager and was aimed at being every tour manager's 'go-to' software for managing all aspects, both financial and administrative, of live touring. It is worth noting that, also in the music-tech space, Luke created a company called Allsonic LLC in 2002 that was both a download, and more significantly streaming company, some 10 years before its time. His final project was a new company based around the successful property development and real estate work of Luke's partner & wife of 30+ years, Jeeb, called Foxtrot Oscar RE Inc. The reference to the phonetic alphabet echoing Luke's long-term passion for planes. A hobby that included owning a Tiger Moth bi-plane in the late '70s and led to him becoming a highly qualified flying instructor (up to and including commercial grade). Luke's interest in sports never waned and one of the last things he did with Jeeb and friends in the hospital just a couple of days before he passed, was watch the America's Cup with focused attention and interest. He was an avid fan of the Tour de France and was looking forward to July 1st. This bright-minded, intelligent music-lover, pilot, businessman, Radio DJ, Olympic Sportsman, software-designer, devoted husband is immediately and deeply missed by the many whose lives he touched and helped so memorably along their way. He is survived by his wife, Jeeb O'Reilly and his stepson, Tori Barnao, of DE Real Estate, and his daughter-in-law to be, Diana Pratasiewicz, and loving mother-in-law Shirley Naiman. You will never be forgotten dear Luke.

I was just doing some research and came across Luke's obituary - I met him many years ago and he was a fun, decent guy. I am shocked and sorry to read of his passing and, although it was a few years ago, I would still like to send my condolences to his family and friends. He certainly was an interesting guy.

My friends and I listened to Luke O'Reilly on WMUR all the time. We gathered together to hear his final broadcast with tears in our eyes. All these years later he is still remembered.

I used to listen to you on WMMR back in the early 70's along with Michael Cuscuna, Ed Sciaky, Cassidy, & Michael Tearson. Always wondered what you looked like and I finally found some pictures of you, but only to find out that you have passed away. At least I have the aircheck recordings that I recorded of you and all of the other early 70's dj's

We'll miss you.

Back in the WMMR days, he was our (me and my girlfriend) very favorite DJ. I remember that he recorded his final show the day before, aired in absentia, and it was synchronized perfectly, meaning, when he said it was ten after seven, it was precisely 7:10 pm. What a perfectionist! He was the best and it showed in the music he played and everything he touched. I'm very sorry, I wasn't aware he passed away. He sure did have an illustrious career. My deepest condolences to Jeeb and his entire family.

I met Luke whilst working in entertainment. Despite his infamous displays of bluster and false bravado, he was possibly the most emotionally vulnerable person I've ever known. Many of his cohorts may be surprised to learn that Luke regretted ever having gone into the music business, considering the level of success he had reached. The demands of touring and putting the needs of the artists he managed before his own took a huge toll on him; he felt he had sacrificed his personal happiness to climb the ladder of fame and fortune. He said he would have preferred academia or to have been a "silent millionaire" owner of a franchise such as McDonald's. Thankfully, during the latter half of his life, Luke finally had a stable home life. Perhaps this was his crowning achievement, his spiritual triumph---Rest in peace, my good fellow...

To his family I have a warm spot in my heart and he will be missed.
As a young guy growing up in Delaware, I always enjoyed him on WMMR.
Being 62 years old now I always liked his playlists.
RIP Luke

Very sorry to hear of Luke's passing . Reading his obituary it's incredible how multi talented he was . I knew him in his youth from waterskiing and he became British Waterski champion and British snow ski champion in the same year which I am sure had never been done before or since . By chance I watched him achieve a highly creditable 19 th place overall in snow skiing in the 1968 Winter Olympics .in the days when British snow skiers were always last .
Clearly he went on to lead a very full and successful life and I am just sorry I never got to catch up with him again.

When The Fixx first arrived in the USA our career was orchestrated by Luke. He introduced us to his friend Ian Copeland's FBI talent agency and took control of the logistics and relationships that would ultimately catapult the band into the spotlight. He and I bonded, and over the years I spent many happy times with him and Jeeb at their home in LA (where he introduced me to flying) and at my flat in London. Luke was truly perceptive and refreshingly straightforward and I always looked forward to his calls. I'm going to miss him.

What a lovely decent man he was (and is) Luke had heart and he loved dogs and motorcycles...basically, he was perfect :)
I will miss our chats, the world is a little less without you. Enjoy your next adventure.

We will always miss Luke, best at everything he put his hands to: skier, waterskier, pilot and flight instructor, artist manager, radio DJ, software developer, husband, dishwasher loader extraordinaire, and most of all, best and loyal friend.

Since meeting you during the Al Stewart days, we'd become more friendly in recent years. I've enjoyed our "chats" and historical musings on Facebook. Thanks for explaining the Irish influence on Liverpool to me too! I'm sorry to see you go, and will miss hearing from you. RIP, my friend. See you on the other side.

It is sweet, not sticky sweet, not candy sweet, but sweet -- generous of spirit -- that folks remember....way back when...when we, at WMMR, in those days, found something new, did something new, shared something new, and people still keep it with theirs.Thank you. Love to Luke. Bill Vitka.

Luke was the perfect addition to WMMR way back when. His easy going delivery, choice of music, and yes, the British accent, made for a great listening experience. I recall that one night he played The Beatles "Julia" for a woman with the same name, who was part of the cleaning crew. Rest well good soul.

Luke called me to join Al Stewart's band in January 1975 soon after I became a professional musician. I was 20 years old and that phone call changed my life. Thanks Luke, you always were very supportive and helpful. Even convincing me to go back to music school in my late 20s to learn orchestration - I never would have done that without his encouragement. May you rest in peace.

Vinyl keeps going around.

One of my most favorite on-air personalities ever at WMMR. Truly a renaissance man, and a superb exemplar of what it means to grab life by the lapels and dance with it til utter blissful exhaustion. I grow old, but with songs still ringing fresh in my soul. Thank you, Luke, for many happy introductions to artists I love to this day.

Luke will truly be missed. No doubt many will appreciate all the efforts and accomplishments he's made in his lifetime. God's word says, "A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death is better than the day of birth." So encouraging to all. (Ec 7:1)

The world is a lesser place without the jocular griping and grimacing, typical British sense of humor, that Luke brought to every interaction. He was an opinionated, straight-shooter and one of the sweetest and most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and getting to know over the last 15 years. Luke always made me feel like family, and while I will miss Luke, I will never forget his stories and the memories of the time I got to spend with him, Jeeb, Tori and their dogs (Ben, Sofie, Max and Charlie) - Lots of love, fondly

Luke was awesome! When I moved here, he gave us a tour of Los Angeles. What made it better was his knowledge of the area, his experience in the entertainment industry, and the little bits of cool information he added. I'll never forget that. Sorry to hear about this. Thinking of you Jeeb.
