Malcolm Smith Obituary

November 29, 1935 - December 18, 2013 Malcolm George Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died December 18 at age 78 at his home in Rolling Hills, California. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Mr. Smith attended Dorsey High and then UCLA where he rowed varsity crew. After graduation, he served for two years in the United States Navy and then attended Harvard Law School. While there, he met and later married Jill Van Hook Smith. He joined Kindel and Anderson as a litigator in Los Angeles, where he became partner. He continued in private practice for over 30 years, most recently as a partner in the firm of Overton, Lyman and Prince. He also served as General Counsel for the Centinela Group. In addition to his law practice, he served Inglewood Park Cemetery for more than 40 years, most recently as Chairman of the Board. He also served as Chairman of the Board for the Park Lawn Memorial Park and Roosevelt Memorial Park cemeteries. He was a past president of the Interment Association of California (now Cemetery and Mortuary Alliance of California) and remained actively and passionately involved in various capacities in the Western group of companies until the time of his death. Most cherished by Mr. Smith was his 52 year marriage to Jill Van Hook Smith, and the family they raised together, which includes three children, their spouses, and seven grandchildren. With his wife, Jill, Mr. Smith raised and exhibited Morgan horses. He always advocated for his passions including the Boy Scouts of America, Wellesley College, the UCLA rowing team and Morgan horses. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held at Inglewood Park Cemetery, 10 am, January 4th. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mr. Smith's name to one of his three favorite causes: Wellesley College (Tel: 800.358.3543, http://www.wellesley.edu/alumnae/give), the Boy Scouts of America (http://aplacetogive.scouting.org/magento/) or the Friends of UCLA Rowing (http://www.uclamensrowing.org/).

Mal---haven't seen you consistently since we worked together at Kindel and Anderson. I was a summer clerk there in 1971. You were an inspiration to me--and a good man. Rest in peace.I'm 66 now, so I'm right behind you.I'd say I'll see you soon---but I'm going to the other place.(smiley face)

Jil: Reading of Mal's death brought back many memories of youth and salad days. Visiting at the Hollywood by the Beach house and then Christmas's at the Bashors'. Mal was always destined for greatness. My sincere condolences.
