Marcus Markowitz Obituary

January 1938 - May 2021 On May 5, 2021 Dr. Mark G Markowitz, husband, father, grandfather, best friend and beloved doctor passed away peacefully at his home in Laguna Beach, CA. He was 83. Mark was born in The Bronx, New York to Johanna and Al Markowitz. He received his BA from New York University, his MD from The University of Louisville and his psychoanalytic training from The Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1964 Mark met the love of his life, Terry, on a blind date. Throughout their marriage, that initial spark was ever present in their playful banter, adoring gazes and sweet flirtations, lighting each other up for 56 years. Their deeply loving and respectful relationship continues to be a role model for love and friendship. From a young age Mark was fascinated by stories. This was the foundation for his passion for movies, music, books, art and people. That profound curiosity is what made him an exceptional psychiatrist, an extraordinary husband, a phenomenal father, an incredible grandfather and the best friend you could imagine. His insights quickly cut to the heart of every matter and simultaneously let you know how much you mattered. He was incredibly generous with his love, his time, his laughter and his deep desire to understand and have meaningful connections with the people he cared for. He was a remarkable man whose strength, determination and passion allowed him to have the kind of life that boy from the Bronx only dreamed of… An iconic love story, a house with stunning views, travels around the world, dinners at the best restaurants with best friends and his absolute favorite, Thanksgiving in Laguna. His enthusiasm for life was as boundless as his CD collection. His charisma was contagious and you could not help but be charmed by his huge smile.Mark said he felt magic three times in his life: once when he met Terry, the second time when he and Terry adopted their daughter Emily and finally, when he met his grandson, Oliver. It is undeniable that he also possessed a unique magic, and his legacy lives in those who were lucky enough to experience his love, humor, devotion, curiosity and twinkle in his eye. This Magic of Mark is missed every single day.Mark will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Emily, son-in-law Scott, grandson Oliver, brothers-in-law Robert and Corey, his family of friends, his patients, and Tower Records.Memorial donations in memory of Mark can be made to No Kid Hungry https://www.nokidhungry.org/californiacampaign or Fair Fight: https://fairfight.com/

Hello,
I'm deeply saddened to have found Dr. Markowitz's obituary. I thought yes, he very likely retired but am so sorry he passed. He was my doctor on & off as a pre-teen, teenager, and young woman. I've always wanted to call or write & tell him, how much he helped me & how much I appreciated his kindness. I wish there were more doctors like Dr. Markowitz. He was rare.
My love and condolences to his beloved wife, daughter & grandson. Thank you

Dr Mark Markowitz was my "third father"! I met him in 2000 for a consultation for my 7 year old daughter. He became our marriage counselor. Then my personal therapist, then friend, then father. I love you. Damien Scott

I was a patient (student) of Dr Markowitz for more than 25 years and there is no question in my mind about the “magic” of Dr Markowitz. I was touched by his special magic and my life continues to be
enriched and transformed by our work. I
can imagine him saying in response to my grief that he left us too early, that his life had been a “very good run”.

I saw Dr Markowitz for over 20 years for a complex psychiatric disorder. I could not have been in better hands. Additionally, he helped train another generation of psychoanalysts as an instructor at the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute. Rest In Peace, Dr Markowitz. You will live forever deep in my psyche where so much of you skillful treatment was rendered. I love you & cannot begin to express the magnitude of my gratefulness. Hi
