David Wittry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - St. Matthews on Feb. 13, 2026.
David E. Wittry, 76, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Forest Springs Health Campus.

A lifelong resident of St. Matthews, he was born on July 31, 1949, to the late George Edward Wittry and Charlotte E. Pracht Wittry.

He was a 1967 graduate of Trinity High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisville. David spent over 30 years as a parts specialist for AC Brake Company. Following his retirement, he continued to serve others through his work at Goodwill Industries, where he restored donated bicycles in their Last Mile to Work program, providing reliable bicycles for individuals without cars to get to and from work.

He was an avid cyclist and member of the Louisville Bicycle Club, where he served as VP of Education, teaching the New Rider & Bike Handling classes for over a decade. Always eager to help others, he enjoyed educating new riders, as well as changing a tire or repairing a bike for a fellow rider. He was also an active participant and board member of the Southeast Family YMCA, enjoying yoga and other group fitness classes. With a friendly demeanor, warm smile and witty sense of humor, he built many meaningful and lasting friendships. Outside cycling and the YMCA, he enjoyed reading, hiking and playing golf.

David is survived by his two children, Dennis (Dawn) Wittry, and Becky Vanyo (Todd); Five grandchildren, Jakob and Lanie; and Amelia, Charlotte and Sabrina; two sisters, Jean Durlauf (Lex) and Sherry Wittry; nephews and niece, Andy (Rebecca) Johnson, Melissa Mayfield and Jon (Rebekah) Durlauf and four great nephews.

A time to visit with family, and to remember celebrating David's life will be from 12p – 5pm on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, St. Matthews.

In keeping with David's favorite things, the family request that in lieu of flowers, to kindly consider a memorial gift to Goodwill Last Mile to Work or to Southeast Family YMCA.
